I was wondering today how expensive/inexpensive it would be to upgrade the door speakers in my F30. I'm pretty sure it's got the basic speakers and I'd like a bit more clarity from the audio.

I think it would be an easy job to do myself but I haven't got a clue which after market speakers would provide a good quality of sound!?

Changing the speakers will be quite easy, you'll have the doors off in a few minutes.

The issue is you'll want an amp, it's likely the head unit won't have enough power to make them work properly, so whilst it will sound better, it will still disappoint you.

if youve got base hifi i.e no tweeters would be better to find a pair of the hifi or harmonkardon tweeters and fit them. if your not happy with the sound after that maybe try adding the amp.

this is my experience after fitting the focal ifbmw to car with base bmw sound. didnt find the speakers making a big difference untill i had an amp fitted

Cheers chaps, not sure I want to go down the route of installing an amp etc. I thought if I could spend say £50-100 on some decent speakers that would be worthwhile.

As above, you'll likely want to start by adding some tweeters, but I'd be surprised if you can find anything that's plug and play to replace the doors and add tweeters for under a hundred quid. The HK tweeter covers alone are around £80 as they are part of the door frame too.

In the same boat. DIY replacing with used HK and covers is £150-£200, with new 2 way more like £300, or pay someone to do this for £400 ish

There are three levels of Audio systems and this link describes every very well.

Upgrading the speaker offers little in the way of improvement if you have a basic system. Ideally, you need to add a new amp with the basic speaker. Later you can add Tweeters and Harman Trim for the car

I used the Eton speakers and decided to upgrade the speakers after the Amp and I used a 4 channel Audison amp with built-in EQ. Works very well and to get the best you need good HD Media files

As an audiophile, I found dealing with teh BMW sound set up really difficult and annoying, my main issue with all of those upgrade kits (even those costing thousands) is the am input is often HIGH LEVEL (speaker signal) this is a no no and you really want a low level signal into the amp to let it do it's job properly.

To do it properly you need an optical interface into the idrive system, which is a massive job and can cost a lot of money, I miss the days of just dropping a double-din HU and be done with it.

Also the 4" speaker size in the doors limits the choice and many proper speakers would be 6.5", which requires building in the doors etc etc...
Maybe I'm missing something?
