6pot E61 vs 4pot F11
Discussion
Been chasing a new car for a while. It’s going to be a high miler. But the car must have full service history and good MOT history. Budget around £7k
Now the goal was to go for a E61 530d but with all the waiting it seems that F11s seem to be dropping into my budget more and more. But they are mostly 520d with the odd 525d (2litre) dropping into budget.
Are the F11’s 4pot engine sharing the same issues as the E61’s 4 pot?
Obviously the f11 will have more of the mod cons and modern interior. Still like the exterior of the E61, aged well.
Are the F11s in 2 litre worth it? Or should I go with a 6 pot E61 for the 6 cylinder (diesel... just not many petrols in budget
)

) Early F11’s still have the issue with the timing chain up until 2014, then again it seems the F11 530 can have issues with the chain too.
For me the biggest problem with the F series is that they are soooooo wide, it makes finding a parking space more difficult.
But I know how you feel, I still haven’t found anything.

Fantastic price, low miles and much easier/cheaper to maintain than a possible leggy and electrical niggle risk laden E6x car

Remember the first 18 months or so of the 525d were 3.0's; they became a 2.0 twin turbo from mid 2011 onwards.stevemcs said:

I don't struggle with the width so much as the length of the car - parallel parking is a challenge (well finding a suitable sized space is).Edited by BFleming on Thursday 15th October 12:05
F11's look nicer but I prefer the E61 to drive. If you can find one and diesel isn't essential, a really well specced 530i auto Touring E61 is a great car and you'll get a lot more car for your £££. E61's don't really suffer electrical dramas - the early ones could but a proper battery is essential. F11's seem far more prone to rear airbag failure as well as corrosion on the door edges.
Being about the same size as a nineties 7 Series, they feel like a tank to drive in comparison.
The M57N diesel in the E61 is a superb engine, and made of sterner stuff than the N57 in the F11. The N47 is a van engine.

The OPs only got a budget of around £6k and he's after a touring.
You're comparing a saloon and an engine that won't be in his budget..

You made out it’s impossible to get that combo in budget you can just try harder.
No I didn't, but we all know getting an F11 535D touring for around £6k is probably not going to happen seeing as they're worth hell of a lot more than that. That's why the OPs been looking at the F11 520Ds...If you think there are F11 535Ds out there near the OPs budget, please put links up

Yeah. After a touring and M Sport as prefer the looks of those.
The only 535d I can get would be in the E61. Definitely won’t be able to get one in F11, unless mile wise it’s done a trip to the moon and back.
Dan... not an E39. I’ve already got one haha. Maybe next time. Ha
So engine wise... go E61. The more affordable F11s (4pots) are quite niggly with timing chains.

530D or 525D and the 530i if one crops up
Stay away from the 4 pots
Yeah. So to avoid engine issues commonly associated definitely want to go e61 6pot.
Luckily there’s plenty of 6pot LCI M Sports. Still got that 535d for sale... with the questionable (in my view) interior.

True. May be better in person. As said, if you want a 2nd opinion pal it's local to mw
Just concerned of bigger bills on a 535 with the twin turbo. And the MPG on them. Don’t really want low 20s when driving around a town.
Might take you up on that offer Dan. At the moment I’m still in local lockdown, so can’t leave the county.
That garage have also got a lovely looking red E60. Nice to see a different colour other than black, blue, grey or silver.

In my old F10 535d pre LCI I averaged 38-42 all the time more often 40-42mpg. Just concerned of bigger bills on a 535 with the twin turbo. And the MPG on them. Don’t really want low 20s when driving around a town.

On long runs into 50’s mpg. The LCI is even better on MPg.

Like you, we could be heading into a very full-on lockdown very soon!
