I need a car that’s a decent family car and good for around 15k per year commuting. I’ve always liked the E91 BMWs and I’ve found a nice example at a dealer near me.

The catch is it’s very high mileage (although that’s probably inevitable in my current budget), so I need to know what to look out for.

It’s an 11 reg with 140k on the clock and 7 stamps in the book. With the longer and variable intervals I guess I can live with that, but are there any other maintenance items I need to check were done? FWIW, the MOT was a clean bill.

What he said +1.

Google "N47 cam-chain" before you make a final decision.

You’re brave looking at a leggy bmw to do that many miles in.

Run away. Nothing wrong with high mileage BMWs. Just quite a lot wrong with high mileage N47s (add weak diffs and gearboxes to the 318d list). +reluctor rings, etc.....

A Mondeo TDCi, Accord 2.2 or a late W203 Merc 220CDI. All are decent reliable estates.

That 318d - unless it's had all the usual litany of problems fixed - is not a good idea.
