I have a 2001 X5 E53 with an amber light on my dashboard that looks like two cars in a queue. What it’s telling me please.

Active Cruise Control IIRC

Why after 5 years of having the car has this come on now and doesn’t it seem to turn off?

Presumably a fault with the system? Worth getting a code reader on it.

Let the car go to sleep (20mins or so; undo the battery and leave it for a good few hours); reconnect and see if that clears the error light...

If not, as said; needs to be plugged into INPA, Carly for BMW, bimmercode/NCSexpert etc... Needs to be these code readers and not a generic code reader FYI

Hopefully the battery disconnect will sort it out though smile

Thanks everyone, I thought it might go after leaving it through the night but hasn’t so I will try to disconnect the battery which I had thought of doing but didn’t know what the light was telling me anyway.

I don't think that an X5 of that era would have ACC.

OP, do you have a picture of the telltale?

Edit:
Something like this perhaps?

It does look like the ACC symbol 7series had, does your X5 have it?

Yes I also thought that and yes that is the light/symbol, what do you think?

Does your car have active/adaptive cruise control, ie the one with the radar in the front that keeps a set distance from the preceding vehicle?

No I think it’s too old for that it’s 2001. I’ve never seen this light before, when I put my cruise control on its just a green light with a speedo and an arrow on the right hand side

Try the battery trick mentioned above, I agree that your X5 never had ACC available but is probably using the same cluster as the E38 7 series. That one did get ACC and maybe the telltale was lit erroneously on yours now.

Bang on - My E39 M5 had the same light in the cluster along with the auto box symbols across to the right of the cluster.

Bit of penny pinching by BMW.

IIRC you could get them all to light up by going in to one of the tests in the hidden menu in the OBC. Along with the speedo showing 185+mph.

Can this be turned off using the OBC then? If so what number test is it?

IIRC no; it'd have to be cluster out and bulb out.

Has it gone off; have you tried the battery undone / reset jobby?
