My wife’s 630i smells of oil. She’s been complaining about it a while and I have driven the car today and when you come to a stop there is quite a strong smell of burning oil.

Car is a 2009 and has done 96k.

Any ideas or anything common to go?

Thanks!

If the N53 is like the N52, cam cover gasket + oil filter housing gasket are common culprits.

(Sump pan gasket and rear main seal can also cause issues but I wouldn't expect such a smell of oil).

This

Rocker gaskets and spark plug gaskets need changing; they're leaking onto the exhaust mani and burning off, that's why you can smell it

You can also get a leak from the oil filler cap which can look like a cam cover gasket leak.

Did you get to the bottom of it? My 630 has developed a leak, only just really noticed it but I think it’s been there sometime. Looks like it’s the Oil filter housing where it’s connected to the cooling system. Some cheap rubber gaskets. Got it booked into Redish Motorsport here in Bristol

Wife's E91 with the N52 3.0 has exactly the same.

I'm sure I had the oil filter housing gasket replaced last year. rolleyes

I was going to try it myself, cheap parts, I have the tools and saw some videos on YouTube of it looking relatively straight forward. But then saw another one where oil and coolant sprayed all over the engine, another that removed the belts to get to a bolt and one who drained all of the coolant. So I had no idea of the correct way!!

I thought similar re doing it myself.

It's one of those jobs where if everything goes well, it's fairly straightforward. However, all you need is one annoying bolt to ruin your day.

It was the rocker cover gasket in the end which is common I believe. All repaired and back home
