I’ve got a 66plate 640d and in August, I pondered selling it to WBAC and using proceeds to swap to something else. Couldn’t see anything else I liked enough so decided to hold onto it.

In August, they offered me £19,175.
In September, i got an update text saying it was not £19,475.
Today it’s £17,310.

Anyone have any insight into what the flip is going on? Purely academic interest... not looking to sell, but curious as to what has caused the dive. Surely the ban on combustion in 2030 can’t be causing this bath.

My take... Car prices were inflated after the first lockdown - months of very little trade, followed by consumer confidence (i.e. some people knew they still had a job, so were spending more freely).
This time dealers managed to stay trading, given the measures they had taken to reopen, internet sales etc. So trade was much more steady. Hence your depreciation has caught up with you.
2030 has nothing to do with it.

It’s a good theory, if I had a view on months jan to July, we could do a wee graph and see the change in rate.

Prices go up and down all the time

My 2012 530i was 6k back in march (iirc) and is back up to 8.6k today which is pretty much what it was in Jan. I check almost weekly, sadly, as i'm always looking for something else but not sure what else I want to get into.

My take is that during the lockdown, especially as it progressed and travel became much less, there was a glut of both new and then used cars on the market. It would not therefore be the best time to sell, unless you really needed to.

Prices were inflated post lockdown. WBAC were quoting £19k for my 335D, which is near enough what I paid from a main dealer, 15 months and 14k miles earlier biggrin

Just under £17k now, which would give me £2500 depreciation over 20 months and 15k miles. I’d be quite happy with that smile

You’re surprised that the valuation is lower with a new September registration, the winter looming, UK lockdown v2 and the world crippled with debt?

I think the WBAC price is plugged into the glass / cap guide so I suspect it’s just dodgy algorithms as opposed to WBAC nefariousness or incompetence

laugh It has nothing to do with trusting them, WBAC is owned by British Car Auctions (BCA) so the prices they offer are based on what the cars are actually making trade, it is one of the most up to date price guides out there.

What happens price wise with WBAC is normally repeated with dealers a couple of weeks later.

They react extremely quickly to market changes.

Right now a 240i, in convertible form, is hardly what people are looking for.

Prices coming out of the first lockdown were very, very high, my old man's X6 went from 21k to £27k, just before the second lock down, two weeks ago they wouldn't bid on it, last week it was £21750 and this week back at £22700.

OP, you probably saw the price for your 6 series at it's silly height and now more realistic level.

There are 640d sports with dealers for £20k, so £17k is a good bid for a car with 40k miles or so.

Wait till next March when furlough ends, government business support finishes and we have the new budget if you want a real shock. laugh

I think the margin between PX, Private and Dealer has got ridiculously large. My father had a 2018 640i Gran Turismo which he paid £31000 for at a year old. Ran it for a year but he has since retired (pilot so no work) and he was finding it too big and kept bumping in car parks so decided he wanted a banger for £2k laugh

BMW offered £21000 (aka they didn’t want it), WeBuyanyCar offered £24500, listed it on Autotrader for £28000 and ended up being bought by a vehicle sourcing company at a very fair price of £26000. Who then sold it back to BMW and it’s currently listed approved used for £31495 (£495 more than he paid for it with an extra 15000 miles on the clock!)

Here are the people that bought it, they’re great to deal with.
