My 428i is dead. What next? 435i? Luxury?
Discussion
Sadly, and after only a couple of months of ownership, my 428i M sport has been written off.
The payout is almost exactly what I paid for it so I've got 15k to spend.
I really respected the 428i and every time I try to think of a replacement, I come back to the 4 Series. But, while it felt very competent and comfortable and good looking, ît never seemed that "special".
So I'm thinking of variations on the 4 Series. Convertible? 6 cylinder? Luxury rather than M sport?
Questions: did I read somewhere that all 35is have sports seats and sports suspension? Even luxury and SE?
If I went from M Sport to luxury what gizmos would I lose? (I like the chrome and wouldn't miss the body kit!)
I don't need the extra performance of the 35 over the 28, but is the noise better / more characterful?
Can you get two large child seats in the back of a convertible?
Thanks

See if you can google a brochure , usually find them in pdf online. That will show for definite the uplift between trims , e.g. sport and M sport ; though I’m confident the M Sport suspension is different.
I’d go for a six cylinder if possible , but not a luxury as the ones I’ve driven didn’t have sports seats or suspension.

Still on this, but fluctuating wildly. One minute I've decided that a 320d Touring will be "enough" and they are good value and fairly easy to find. Next minute I'm looking at 330i convertibles.
I'm wondering if the reason the 428 didn't feel special was either the 4 cylinder engine or the auto. Both of which were very efficient but lacked sparkle.
So I quite fancy a manual six cylinder petrol - all 3 of my previous BMWs have been this. But that rules out F30 unless I go all the way to 335. E90 33Oi?

M235i is the answer surely? You can easily get child seats in.
Maybe even the convertible? Top down 6 cylinder loveliness.
I’d always go approved used with a BMW and you can get them for about £16500-17500 as a lower end

You’ll easily achieve £15k private unless you want to chuck a couple grand in for peace of mind.

IMHO, and as you're thinking yourself, your 428i didnt feel special as it was a 4 banger.I'm wondering if the reason the 428 didn't feel special was either the 4 cylinder engine or the auto. Both of which were very efficient but lacked sparkle.

Go test drive a 435i auto or 440i auto. Or if a manual is your thing find one of those and try. The 3.0i turbo is a superb engine.
I've an E90 330i as well as a M140i. The E90 330i (Or did you mean E92?) is a lovely car but feeling its age now and it will feel a generation behind what you had. Some really nice ones still about. Maybe find as late a model one as you can to test drive and see what you think.
I'd go 435/440i auto if I was you, I did and I love it. Beautiful 6 cylinder engine which is smooth & powerful plus brilliant 8-speed auto, one of the best auto boxes I've driven.
The M235i is a great little car, I had one a few years back, but always felt the looks were a bit 'soft' and it definitely looks under-wheeled; if you want a convertible, deffo a 4-series for the hard top roof.
Good luck.

I had a 4 series convertible and it felt like it weighed a billion tons. The M235i is a great little car, I had one a few years back, but always felt the looks were a bit 'soft' and it definitely looks under-wheeled; if you want a convertible, deffo a 4-series for the hard top roof.

It’s 250kg(!) heavier than the coupe.
When the roof was down and in the boot it felt extremely tail heavy.

Going on your previous car history, I would question if any newish BMW would have the sparkle you are looking for..
Be brave, go wild.
e46M3 currently the top of the list and has been for 48 hours - a record! Also Alpinas. Be brave, go wild.
Anyonw want to take a guess - if an M3 and a B3S are the same price now, which one will be worth more in 5 years time? (This is a good argument with my wife who was please with the value change on my Mk1 Golf, and a few other "future classics" I've owned.
6 series also amazing value so not going away!
