Hey all.

So I had my car taken in at Specialist Cars BMW as an EML light showed up on my car.

The OBD machine showed that the car had an issue with the EGR Valve, however when they inspected it, they said that the test came out fine, and that the EGR Valve was fine.

However they did find evidence of rodent damage. Fortunately, it wasn’t too bad. The rodent had bitten through the insulation cover and also the cover for the air mass flow sensor wiring. However upon next visit, I’ll find out if it managed to chew its way through to the glow plug wiring (unlikely) as they’ve picked up an issue with the cylinder 5 glow plug circuit and the EML has now appeared again since.

I am struggling to source a noise insulation cover (as shown in pic). Can anyone let me know where I can find one?

Thanks!!

I believe the tarnished part may be 51717204334.

Available from your friendly local dealer, and ebay (probably cheaper).

Looks exactly the part I’m after. I’m checking through eBay and can’t find anything. Going to have to find a 640d breaking or then buy brand new

We had a mouse decide to make a nest in the bottom of the wife's i8. Only found out from a dash error when it chewed through one of the high-voltage cables! Crispy fried mouse and surprisingly cheap repair bill from Listers BMW.

Price does not look back for a new one - https://www.leebmann24.de/stirnwand-oberteil-mitte...

I don't know what it was but I knew it was a 640D without reading your user or down this thread as so many ask about the missing bolts on this piece!

Thanks!! That’s exactly the part i needed.

This is the 2nd 640d i know of that has suffered from rodent damage. Happened to my uncles as well.

Pain in the ass!

Damn! I’m relieved the rodent in my car supposedly hasn’t done much damage (as it seems anyways). I’m hoping to just be done with this episode as to be safe, I’m not really driving my car.

Just an update, looks the mouse has not returned but yeah BMW quoted £255 for the insulation parts with labour also.. May get this done before I sell the car off tbh.

As for the issue with the EGR, it was initially diagnosed as working fine... my luck meant that the light went off upon my inspection.

However the light came back on, plugged in the OBD 2 reader and PO46c flashed back up again. Car feels laggy, takes a lot of thinking before giving any performance, and then finally flagged up the drive train issue.. it went within 5 seconds though and hasn’t reappeared since.

Spoken to BMW since and it’s due back in tomorrow. Thankfully, I don’t need to repay for the diagnosis.

Should my warranty refuse to cover it, it will cost £455 included labour from the main dealer which is reasonable in my opinion.

Not had anything for the glow plug in terms of fault codes or warnings etc.. hmm

All sorted now. EGR valve was replaced by BMW. Did it all overnight and for a delightful £300.

Well chuffed with the service from BMW specialist cars. Big thumbs up for them

Was the EGR not done under the recall? I presume the 640d had one as it’s the same engine as the 335d which did.

Egr cooler was done under a recall. I haven’t had anything for the actual egr valve needing a recall

I believed, but may be wrong, that the whole EGR/Cooler assembly was changed out.

I did ask, and they said it was only the cooler that was replaced. Egr was untouched

They split the assembly just before the recall.

It now means a number of people are having egr valve related issues due to them being damaged in the process. Ironically leading to coolant loss....

That being said I am suspicious my cooler is going again despite being changed in January.

I must say the amount of people ive heard complain about the egr valve going straight after the egr cooler is ridiculous.

Though, i think i caught it early enough to not suffer any coolant issues and so forth. Only had issues with lag and the EML.
