Hi All, a couple of months ago I bought a manual 330i E92, I don't want to go crazy with the mods but I felt the gear lever is a bit looooong throw and rubbery. I was thinking of buying a short shifter kit. Is there any brand or place I could buy one here in the UK? I've stuggle to find a page to buy aftermarket kit for my car.

Also on this topic how easy to install would it be ? I've watched some youtube videos but they are all on V8 M3's and they remove exhaust sections out to make space to remove the shifter mechanism. If that is the case that is probably more involving than I was thinking.

TIA for your help !

I've had an e46 325ti, e36 M3, e46 M3, e90 330i and an e92 335i amongst others over the years and never felt that was an issue, I always thought they were relatively short and tight gearboxes compared to other cars. Could there be an issue? something a bit worn maybe?

I drove a manual 335i , E90, on sale at a main dealers and was told it had a SSK from BMW , maybe it was a M performance badged kit. Worth exploring with a good BMW parts dept. if still available as it was excellent.

I've got one fitted in a 130i (55 plate). Had it 11 years now.

Was one of my early mods and it makes a huge difference to shift speed / feel.

Part number your after is 25110434217

Dougie.

Here's a Howto for fitting to your car. (from the cabin, no jacking required). Takes 30mins-1hour.

Yes I think its quite ok, nothing feels loose or rubbery, just wanted to make it a bit shorter and notchy. Also I thought it was a straigthforward not very expensive mod to do on this lockdown.

Brilliant ! Thanks for your help that's what I was looking for, something to improve a bit (better if its OEM quality) and not to complicated that involves jacking the car up, as I park my car on the street and I don't have to many tools and not fancy working on the cold street outside smile Thanks !

You don't need an expensive shifter kit.

What you need is a £30 secondhand lever from an early M Sport 320d E90*. About an hour of fiddle to fit, job done. BMW discontinued them around 2006/7 and just used a stubbier gear knob instead. These levers have a nice short throw but not stupidly so.

  • I have one.

ok cool, I remember my Impreza sti used to have a short shifter as standard, it does feel sharper, but I have never had any desire to change mine. Apparently depending on the model BMW there are varying amounts of shift variants if you like and seemingly most are interchangeable. Ok I must concede I did look into it once myself and discovered that. If I recall (but not sure) the Z4 has a shorter shift than say a 316i, don't quote me on that exactly though as I don't remember, but you take my point. maybe something like that would be ok as I think the short shifter kits for BM's aren't that cheap, well they weren't when I looked so decided to keep it as it was as, like I said not so bad compared to most cars
