Hi guys,

Seems my front ABS / wheelspeed sensors are on the way out. Getting a lot of the error where ASC light + ABS light comes on (though not the handbrake light, those only seem to light when the rear sensors are gone). My cheap code reader can't figure out which of the front ones is dead, but since chances are very high they're both original (and twenty years old) I figured it best to replace both at the same time. However, I have some trouble locating the right ones. Bmw part sites throw two OEM numbers:

34521164651 OEM NR1
34521165609 OEM NR2

Couldn't really spot the difference, I only know that my car does NOT have DSC so I need the ones with the grey connector instead of the blue connectors.

My BMW specialist where I head for larger maintance and repairs says I need Bosch sensors since they're the OEM supplier. And I know by now that BMW is a bit picky about the sensor quality, so it seems wise to go with the OEM brand and not some cheap knock-off.

Could you guys confirm which of the numbers I need and Bosch is indeed the BMW supplier for the front ABS sensors (for cars with ASC, prior <2002)

Thanks!

ATE were oe on my M3, I’ve replaced all with Bosch & had no issues in the 2 years since fitting.

I'll probably get flamed for this.

When I bought my e46 it had the ABS light on. I ordered this off amazon for two reasons
1) it was on Prime next day delivery
2) I wasn't 100% sure if the sensor was the issue, so didn't mind spending £18 on this as investigatory work.

Anyways, fixed the issue been fine for 18 months.

It's the ABS / DSC pressure sensor. It's what was causing the ABS/DSC issue on my e46.
Just unscrewed the old, in with the new. Problem solved.

Looks like yours has been diagnosed with speed sensor issue.
Ignore my comment, I read ABS / DSC issue and assumed is was pressure sensor related. Obv didn't read post properly! sleep

I replaced my front wheelspeed sensor on my 2000 330Ci

RealOEM suggests the part number: 34521165609

I replaced with a Bosch item:

Also replaced the bolts as well

As per the thread linked above, be wary. They have a habit of being totally seized in place especially if they are are the original >20 year old items. Mine needed to be drilled out (wouldn't shift with PlusGas, mole grips, blow torch etc)!

I only ever buy the cheapest ones on Ebay, about a tenner. They work just fine and I've never had a problem. You can bet the 'genuine Bosch' ones are made in the PRC.

They can be a bd to replace. The iron hub rusts and can grip the plastic sensor with the might of Zeus. The allen bolt can rust into the sensor but I just buy a new allen screw and grind the sensor away until you can see most of the bolt thread. With WD40 the old screw comes out. That done, twist the sensor back and forth until it shows some sign of movement. Sometimes it's quicker to remove the front hub, disc and caliper and belt it out from the outside. E36's are worse though, maybe because they're older.

It's one of two DSC pressure sensors fitted to the brake master cylinder. Only fitted to DSC cars.

You haven't said when the warning lights come on.

Does your code reader show "live data" if so go for a drive with it plugged in showing wheel speed data, you may well find one reads differently.

I used an £11 eBay Chinese sensor today, worked a treat. Didn’t help with the seized bolt! Osf abs sensor now working.

I had to replace my nearside rear sensor last weekend. If I remember correctly it is the only one that controls the speedometer and odometer, so there was no need for diagnostics for me. I think I killed it just before Christmas driving along a lightly flooded road. To be fair it put up a fight and started working again Christmas morning, died again a few days later, then started working again and lasted long enough for the car to go through its MOT at the beginning of January. Two days after the MOT it died its final death, so I was pretty lucky it lasted through the MOT.

The bolt 'holding' the sensor in is near enough ready to cause a ball-ache, so I've only put that in finger tight coated in anti-seize (didn't have a new one to hand) and the sensor itself seems to fit pretty snug on its own. Hopefully I won't have to mess with the thing again anyway. I opted for a sensor made by Delphi and it seems fine so far and should be as its a decent enough brand. Some people would be happy that their odometer has stopped working, but with 182K on the car anyway it might as well keep going and I like to be above board.

A relative of mine has an E46 touring and an ABS sensor on that has been playing up since Christmas/New Year, but it isn't the nearside rear.

When it comes to sensors, which do you think is worth spending the ££ to get Original BMW or equivalent OEM?

When I had the crankshaft position sensor issue on my E46, I was under the impression Original BMW would be the best option.

I’d still stick with gen for engine sensors.
