Looking to buy a new SUV at some point and wondered if anyone had any experience of the two 4.0 X3s please?

Basically Petrol or Diesel?

Been a few threads on this. It is a M40D and M40i not a 4.0, basically a 3.0 twin turbo (Petrol or Diesel). I have the 40D as I think the torque suits the car better. The Petrol is a great engine but needs more revving as you would expect.

The diesel is better on fuel but doesn't have the occasion that the petrol 3 litre brings. Some argue that petrol will hold its value better as diesel is now the devil's fuel. Not sure that's going to be the case though.

Both 2020 models adopt an 48v MHEV system.

Having done 2k miles since new (Dec 2019) I wish I'd bought the X3M Competition but hey ho.

Very helpful thank you.

I was aware that the M40D had adopted the 48V mild hybrid setup, but has the M40i also? I can’t find reference to this on the BMW site.

Thanks!

I went X3 M40i from a 330d Touring. As mentioned you have to rev more if you're used to a diesel. Lovely sounding engine, can be very economical if you aren't driving like a bat out of hell, however does encourage this kind of behaviour. I'm not unhappy with the choice I made and find as my mileage has dropped (COVID) I'm less bothered about the economy anyway. Done 18k in 2 years now (14k and 4k!), 28.8mpg overall with recent tanks nearer 26mpg.

You are right, seems only the D got it.

Edited to add, PH is a great source of info but model specific stuff is better here:

Many thanks - I used to visit that site but it was very much aligned to the US market and options / deals etc so I never checked back. Will take a look.. thanks again.

Happy X3 M40i owner. If you are deciding between the M40D and M40i (assume this is in US as wasn't aware 40D in UK) then it's entirely down to fuel preference and mileage really.

I drive 10k miles a year at the absolute maximum, let alone nowadays with COVID severely restricting anywhere close to that, so Petrol works fine. The petrol engine, the B58 is an absolute beaut of an engine, so many more knowledgable people than me rate it as one of BMWs and the worlds finest, so i was sold on that aspect.

No regrets from me, especially off the line, she's an absolute sleeper but flies.

Great stuff - am waiting for LCI model to kick-in with guaranteed red brake callipers as well as the 48V system to arrive. Hopefully by later this year, there’ll be more stability in prices (ie more dealer contribution) to make the numbers stack up more favourably than current.
