I've seen various forum posts saying 320i remap well to roughly 328i levels and that the engines/turbos are very similar between the 328i and 320i.

What I want to know is how well the autobox etc holds up over the longer term with a (gentle & decent quality) remap in place. Has anybody had a map in place for a few years and can give me any feedback?

It's not a money thing, i've been searching for a 328i for a long while now, and cannot find one with the right spec. 320i however are fairly plentiful. It's just that when I test drove one it felt a bit flat.

It would be an auto, touring, non-X drive that I'm after.

Thanks

It's the pistons and compression ratio that differ between the 320i and 328i. The 328i is 10:1 and the 320i is 11:1 which is just too high to be increasing too much. Map a 320i to 250 bhp and it will go pop. A mate is workshop controller at a BMW dealership and there are a few 320i warranty claims being kicked out when a 320i sts itself due to being remapped. 320i and 328i turbos are the same.

Okay thanks, sounds like it's not worth the risk. I'll have to keep hunting for my unicorn

Better look for an LCI with the B48 engine, much more reliable than the N20.

B48's have a stupid plastic coolant return pipe that can break, dumping all the coolant in very short order. I think there is a recall or 'quality' enhancement on these. I think it's F30 and G20 plus others.

It wouldn't be a BMW without a crap component or two failing.
