Bmw 645 convertible top not working
Discussion
Hi all not posted in a while but would like some advice as to why the soft top isn’t working, the rear glass got stuck half way and when I manually opened the roof the glass smashed
I’ve powered up the rear window motor and it works but is there something I’m missing like a control module that makes the rear roof glass work or not work please?. Also the back of the roof doesn’t sit all the way and there’s a warning soft top not locked and red light flashing on the switch panel.
Thanks

Thank for the reply, I found a sensor in the rear screen compartment but this goes into the loom and not sure how to go about checking it as I’ve put direct power to the screen motor and that works fine but something it preventing it to work via main button and the diagnostics machine didn’t help although it’s referring to the rear window drive

How have you powered up the rear window? Just by giving a 12v feed and earth to the motor, or powering it via the diagnostics?
The rear window won’t work via the switch if the roof is out of position - which it is, and the roof will not operate if it doesn’t know the position of the window or it’s not fully down - which it wasn’t to begin with.
You need to replace the glass first and manually power it down to its lowest point - then reset the roof to either fully open or fully closed. Then you can check the operation of the window via the switch and see what’s happening - it gets it’s feed from the two relays in the boot - pink relays I think- u need to see if both of these operate when you press the switch as it needs both as one gives the 12v feed and the other gives the ground and then it reverses the relays to run the motor backward

Thank you for your reply, I powered it off a probe to the confirm the motor wasn’t blown/burnt out. yes I’ll get a new glass and put it all back together and set the motor regulator at it’s lowest position before giving it all a reset and try. I did notice two pink relays but wasn’t sure what they were thanks The rear window won’t work via the switch if the roof is out of position - which it is, and the roof will not operate if it doesn’t know the position of the window or it’s not fully down - which it wasn’t to begin with.

I did hear a clock when pressing one of the centre roof buttons but the glass itself didn’t move. Then I stupidly smashed it with the hood :@

Yeh u need to double check both are clicking at the same time when you operate the switch
Also worth checking is the feeds and earth up to the relays - pin 2 (red and green wire on one and red and white on the other relay) should be 12v feed all the time but worth checking with ignition on, and pin 5 (brown wires) should be the earth - same on both relays

Appreciate this Elliot I’ll get the tester out on it and let you know what I find Also worth checking is the feeds and earth up to the relays - pin 2 (red and green wire on one and red and white on the other relay) should be 12v feed all the time but worth checking with ignition on, and pin 5 (brown wires) should be the earth - same on both relays

Why? It maybe above something your are uncomfortable giving a go, but if the OP is handy with a multimeter and has some software that can at least read the faults with the roof- why wouldn’t he give it a go. I think it’s less risky than someone not knowing what they are doing and messing about with brakes on a car and plenty of people on here are happy doing that
Would you believe me if I told you that I’ve had some really really bad experiences with garages over the years like two full respray jobs that went horribly wrong and now don’t let anyone touch my cars anymore unless I’m physically watching every move they make as they’re all out there to con us out of everything they can with false promises about what they’re going to do and what they actually do :@
