Are x3 sill steps functional?

Hi all, as above, trying to help my brother out with a car purchase. Some models (2008 ish he is looking at, whatever generation that is) have wider sills with metal trim which may be handy for elderly relatives to clamber aboard.

Question is are these functional and can you stand on them or are the just for show?

I believe the running boards are indeed functional so you can stand on them. Sorry, not sure on the weight limit.
