What are people opinions on this guys rant about not remapping BMWs particularly the diesels which tend to get done a lot. I wasn't aware it caused so much unreliability?

He talks as if he is the omniscient wizard of the BMW world. He’s not. Some of what he is says is correct, some nonsense. Given this I wouldn’t recommend him as a solid source of advice.

He tries to get views with dramatic titles for his videos. Painful.

He does have a point, but hidden behind a veneer of utter bellendery.

Doesn't surprise me these silly mapped diesels pop their gearboxes though, especially with your stereotypical remap driver hoofing it everywhere.

I watched some of one of his videos once and thought he’s a bit of a nob.
My diesel has been mapped for about 6 years and is now up to 156,000 miles. So far so good.

Combined with the fact very few will change the transmission oil.

In the end, if you have your car remapped correctly - the output power & torque will not exceed the capability of the gearbox anyway (with reference to automatics at least).

Everyone acknowledges that increased performance demands = increased maintenance requirements.

While the guy comes across as a complete K*b, the basis of what he is saying is true. I agree that that he says is over stated and not every car is going to blow, but the more you push the engine past the BMW spec. the more the chances are it will fail.

I've watched a few of his videos and didn't really get much out of them. He spends all the time talking and not doing or showing.

It's no different to any modified car. Components fail on race cars all the time. If you work towards improving performance, you tend to want to utilise said performance and thus increase the stresses on components.
It won't just be a power or torque hike that causes the issue.

E92 330d manual.
Edit, with the last of the M57 engines.

I knew who it was before I clicked the link. Some of his advice is okay but otherwise it’s mostly click bait. Some of the buyers guide videos are funny e.g. check the windows are working... opens the hood on a 4 pot derv and says something like: “you’re gonna wanna make sure it’s quiet like this.” Bag of nails mate.

The doctor does come across as an angry man who is on a mission to save all BMW owners from themselves.

It's a shame as one or two of his videos are probably right, but you have to endure the angry bluster and click hair nonsense to get there, so it just isn't worth it.

First part isn't true. You need to check the specifications of your gearbox, as sometimes there isn't much headroom before you're over the rated spec.

Edit: As an example, the B58 in a 340/440i puts down 332ft lb . It uses the ZF8HP50 which is rated to 369ft lb. Even conservative tunes will put you right at that figure, and most tunes over it.

Angry does sum it up. Keeps making me chuckle.
