BMW AUC/extended warranty?
Discussion
So from following the M5 thread here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I’m picking up a 335d soon from a main dealer and will want to get a towbar fitted, probably aftermarket, so will have to be coded to the car etc.
The question I have, will that invalidate the warranty? I could foresee all sorts of issues being the towbar will have to be coded, providing the warranty company with lots of get out clauses etc.
I know the manufacturer warranty will allow mods but insurance backed warranties don’t have to.
Any experiences?

Allianz, the BMW extended warranty company emailed me in response to my question:
"Good Morning,
A BMW supplied and fitted tow bar would not have any effect on the vehicles Insured Warranty.
However fitting a non-genuine aftermarket would affect the warranty. We would not look to consider any claims if the tow bar was to cause consequential damage to a covered component.
We do not cover adjustments, modifications, alterations, or damage caused by tampering, disconnection, improper adjustments or repairs. Eg. We would not know how the electrics are installed on an aftermarket kit.
A repairing retailer maybe best to advise on the options on an installation on a tow bar.
Hope this helps and any further queries not hesitate in contacting us"

So you cannot have ANY mods unless bought/fitted by BMW?
Exactly, no mods unless you have it in writing that they are happy to cover it. sjj84 said:

Exactly, no mods unless you have it in writing that they are happy to cover it. From caravan forums BMW fit Westfelia tow bars - but pay hundreds of £'s more. Never heard of anyone having a problem with them. I've got a detachable witter fitted to my E91 325d estate. No problems what so ever. Cant see how could cause any sort of failure but mines not the 335. Maybe check that the BMW one doesn't include any cooling modifications for engine or gearbox first.
Had the BMW warranty on car but never needed to use it for anything(£250 excess)
PS e91 cane with plug and play type wiring kit would assume that 335d would be same- give Westfelia a ring and ask them sure they will be more than happy to give you details and confirm they are original fit for BMW and how much you will save by buying direct
Limk to towbar no experience with this supplier

I'm fairly sure you can have an OEM BMW part fitted by someone other than BMW and be covered. Just make sure it's fitted correctly to BMW's spec and standard. So I could have a BMW tower fitted elsewhere IF I trusted the person to do it correctly. Is it worth the saving to possibly void the warranty though?

I'm guessing it will depend on the dealer you go to as I heard some people get warranty work even if the car is modded (not by BMW) and some do not?!So I could have a BMW tower fitted elsewhere IF I trusted the person to do it correctly. Is it worth the saving to possibly void the warranty though?
I have a different exhaust on my M6 so this wont be covered by BMW incase of any issue, but they could turn around and say the engine screwed up because of the exhaust.....yadda yadda yadda....
