I bought a brand new BMW in Jan 2020. Ever since I’ve had the car it says that a service wouldn’t be due until Dec 2021 in the dashboard. However, it says that an oil service has been required since Jan 2021, a whole year before it’s supposed to be due. Should I just get an oil change now and get a full service in December? This is my first BMW so any help would be appreciated.

I think it’s mileage and date based.

Presume you’ve got the mileage first ?

The requirement is you change the oil based on the computers assessment of time, driving style & milage. So around 2 years or 18k the oil should be changed.

I haven’t reached two years or 18k miles. I am at 12600 miles, but the light has been on since 12000. That’s why I am not sure what to do. I went in to Douglas Park (where I purchased it) and they said that the 2 years/18k miles was conditional on how you drive. They said if you drive in town a lot you’ll need it changed sooner but if you drive on the motorway a lot then it would be later. At this time I suspected it was a bit of a con because I’m never off the motorway. The car is only saying engine oil required right now so should I just get the oil change and not the service? Thanks in advance.

I know it sounds like a cliche but but I drive in a very efficient manner. As I said I am on motorway at least 70% of the time, switching to higher gears sooner rather than later, always in eco pro and always use my start/stop at lights.

if it needs it doing it needs it doing. VW Group cars are exactly the same, they have a sensor, oil changes are always needed sooner than initially displayed.

Isn't it a case of when the car was built vs. when it was sold? The car may be brand new to you, but could be sat somewhere for months before the sale. The fluid clocks still tick regardless of when the car was registered?

Two years is the max it can go regardless of how many miles you have ( or haven’t ) driven

CBS ( condition based servicing ) will tell you what/when needs doing

If it’s saying it needs an oil service then it needs it

If you fail to adhere to the CBS then you could invalidate your warranty

Did you take the service plan out when you bought it ?

Getting 12k miles out of your oil, is hardly a disaster.

It’s a brand new motor. You might as well treat it to some new oil (oil service)

I’m not sure I follow the “full service” part? You don’t get those on modern BMWs. Each separate part tells you when it needs doing and then you get that but done - oil, brakes etc. There’s no annual service.

Unfortunately I didn’t take the service plan, I don’t mind paying a premium for BMW but I really didn’t think the service plan was good value and I’m of the same mindset now. Personally I just think they have over complicated matters. I will get an oil change done immediately.

buy your own oil (so they dont charge you x times more!) and let them change it if you want the $tealer stamp

12,000 miles on a fill of oil is pretty good going. There are lots of factors at play in determining the oil condition - dilution by fuel, the stop/start nature of driving, cold weather and how long the engine is in a cold-running map, higher engine temps, so on so forth.

Is it a big pain for you to take the car in after 12 months? I change my vehicle oil in my car and bike once a year at the very least.

You could extract a sample of oil and have it sent to an oil analysis laboratory to get some analysis done on it, see if it really does need changing. But by the time you've done that, you might as well pop into BMW for an hour and get it changed!

Why would you not take the car for a service?

It has an oil quality sensor, your oil has fallen below the quality required.

To get 12k from a turbocharged car used in any conditions is very good. I even change the oil on my 320d every 8 to 10k....... If I had a brand new car I'd be doing it every 5-6k !

Also, by not getting the oil changed when the car says, you will invalidate your engine warranty.

Just buy a genuine filter from your local dealer and a certified oil from Euro Car Parts and pay your local VAT registered garage £75 in labour to swap the oil.

I haven’t been driving for a long time and this is my first car so I just wasn’t sure about it all. I have no idea about any of this stuff. Just learning. I am taking it to Halfords on Saturday where they will do an oil change for £81.99. Due to COVID i need to be more economical with money at the moment and £81.99 is a lot better than Douglas Park charging £170. The he reviews for Halford seem really good and they use BMW approved oil.

Do they use a genuine BMW oil filter?

I can't see how -

Genuine BMW oil filter will be around £20 retail
Assuming 5L of oil at £30 with ECP code
And 30 of labour?

I don't see it.

I'd rather spend a little bit more and go to a trusted local independant garage.

And the cost probably won't be much more

Certainly times can't be that rough for you to buy a BRAND NEW car smile

Halfords will not be able to reset the computer telling you that the oil change needs doing, IINM.

Nor, I expect, will they be able to update the on-board service history confirming that the oil change was done and by whom.

Take it to BMW or a specialist BMW indy.

If the car says it needs doing, it needs doing. You can open up the iDrive to tell you which maintenance is coming up.

Halfords appear to be able to update electronic service records (but not iDrive directly)

https://www.halfords.com/car-servicing/faqs/

Suggestions of the holy grail of 'trusted independents' frustrates me. Many people don't have one so where to start? Ask around and you just get people's mates. There's a certain amount of reassurance dealing with a known brand such as Halfords. I've tried a couple of independents and had little success and I suspect little comeback if I have an issue.

No, I don't work for Halfords but I could just hear the rage from people when it was suggested!

Yes, this happened to me which I was well pissed off by. When I bought ours it was 8 months old, 2,000 mile demo and the salesman told me no servicing for another 16 months as it is two year service intervals( assuming mileage isn't hit first). 12 months later service flags up and when I asked at BMW regarding the two year service I was told this starts from when the engine and fluids went into the car on the manufacturing line, 4 months even prior to delivery to Bmw showroom. Great car but cheating bds and lying salestt.

What are electronic service records?
