Hi, I have been interested for a while in the M340i. I've had a 2017 530d xdrive and a 2018 M240i and this car seems to give me my favourite elements of both. Sensible looking, planted feel, xdrive, but also the B58 lump and easily as much power as I could ever use on a road.

There seem to be quite a few <1 year old cars with a few k miles for £35-40k. I'm a bit nervous about used values though: should I wait a bit longer, will it be seen as less desirable as proper new generation M3's and M4's start to become available, do you think used values of M340i's will soften generally ?

Also, for anyone who has run both G30 and G20, is the G20 as quiet on the motorway ? That's the one thing I worry I might miss from the G30.

Thanks

Following with great interest - F gen 440i’s were £38k brand new in 2017 / 2018 and clearly we don’t have time machines, but how times change.

I would suspect that M prices command a premium and the gap in price would be too substantial to have a major impact here, especially given that they’re brand new and likely hardly any discounts on them etc.

I’d say it’s more a case of car pricing in general being quite strong and lack of strong (new car) discounts in general which are more of a contributing factor.

I guess have a look at F31 340i Touring prices, the M340i will follow in its predecessors footsteps.

Personally wouldn’t touch one until at least 3 years old.

As a starting point, BMW themselves think the m340i will be worth about £20k in 4 years based on the GFV. 4 year old F31 340i prices seem a bit stronger than that, but the market is weird at the moment.

I find my m340i very quiet on the motorway, has excellent insulation and the acoustic glass helps. If anything, I find it a bit too refined for my taste. I cannot compare to a 5 series unfortunately.

OP. I bought my 440 brand new in November 2017. List price was £49k. BMW were discounting them at the time so I paid £40k. I’m looking to change it now and it’s probably worth about £20k. No reason to believe that the 340 won’t follow a similar trajectory.

Ditto here - here’s hoping! As much as I like WFH, no more long commutes etc etc, the pandemic has messed up car markets in the short term and if Germany declares a third-wave then who knows what that’ll mean for production and factory supply.

TBH I’m surprised more 3 y/o cars aren’t being chopped in if the PCPs are up and I was expecting to see more from old PCPs which have expired. Either that or people are paying the balloon to keep the car, rather than handing it back. With prices what they are, I’d doubt someone who bought a new car heavily discounted etc 3 years ago would be able to get in to something comparable for similar prices today. Hopefully stability and recovery will start to help.

I'm just sorting the finance for a new one, the balloon / final payment after 4 years and 56k miles is £18209.

That's for one with just the tech pack and merino leather, so not hugely spec'd.

Been given roughly 17% off new through the UK Forces scheme, best any other dealer could do was 11%.

Should hopefully give you a decent idea of actual new / used prices.

I was surprised to get an M340i as a rental car earlier in the year. They must have a few as my colleague has one as a rental at the moment as well. I can only assume these will have an impact on nearly new prices when they are sold on after 6 months.

A few hundred rental cars won't be enough to affect the market price.

I can't imagine BMW sell a huge number of M340i's so I suspect a few hundred ex-rentals might affect the market price! Having said that, I doubt there's as many as several hundred M340i's in the hands of rental companies...

Cheapest AUC car at the moment is £33.8k with 16k miles. Reg Dec 19.

It is also quite a poor spec but they do come well equipped anyway I suppose.
