640d GC Vibrations...
Discussion
Hey all.
I have a vibration from my LCI 640d GC when braking.. it’s really quite bad when braking at motorway speeds, but barely noticeable locally. I opted for brembo disc and pads at a cost of £700+ including fitting approx a year back and ran them in for 500 miles.
They were fine for a while however overtime worsened. Got plenty of life on them.. Due to a previous buckle, my front tires have worn irregularly, however I’m not sure if this would be a contributing factor to the vibration when braking?
Car did suffer from the usual 640d notorious vibration when driving, however majority of that seems to have gone when the rear tension struts were replaced by BMW. But it feels as if the car vibrates a bit more again than it did when first replaced in Jan 2021, but improves with time when the tyres warm up. Again, I’m not sure if tyres are the contributing factor to this minor vibration when driving, or then whether I take the plunge and replace the tie rods as suggested to me previously (one was changed pre my ownership of the car and is apparently not the same size as irregular, but was assured it made no difference?).
I think my time with the car is starting to naturally come to an end after a joyous 2 yrs + and shy of 40k motorway miles under my ownership. She has served me well but is starting to show a few too many niggles for my liking (boot struts and front parking sensors still need to be sorted for e.g.), and she definitely is no longer getting the use she used to due to WFH.
Can anyone recommend anything at all to cure either of the vibrations so I can enjoy my last few months of owning the 6 without BMW telling me that they can’t replicate the vibrations on every road test? Do I just replace the tires, the pads/brakes etc..?
Thanks all!

Had a 640d.
And many vibrations.
From what you’ve said.
Could be any of, discs, joints / bushes or bent wheel.
It’s reassuring to know that I’m not the only 640d owner whose had these issues..And many vibrations.

Definitely not reassuring knowing that the problem is one of many different things 😬
I think I may have the alloys checked over again, and then replace the brakes as a start point.. see how i go from there tbh.
So annoying as this car and the vibrations has left me with PTSD. Any time i drive, i try to see if the car is still working ok now
Start at the contact patches, and then go from there. The fact you’ve not been using the car much lately could be a contributing factor. Check the discs for pickup on the friction surface as I had terrible judder when braking, I had the disc surface cleaned.
If the shake can be felt through the seat it’s the rear end, if it’s the front it’s the steering.
Mine is a 535d so it’s a similar chassis and I find mine very sensitive to wheel balance.

Interesting. I did originally think it was balanced incorrectly as this was the case a previous time these brakes juddered. Had the balancing corrected and it automatically stopped juddering when braking for a while.. then just progressively reintroduced itself. If the shake can be felt through the seat it’s the rear end, if it’s the front it’s the steering.

Been a few times since the struts on the rear were replaced and they said alignment and balancing were both fine.. said the alloys were fine also.. think i may try another garage for second opinion
Definitely going to check again to see where the shake is.. i feel like it’s the front end but think I could do with a recheck and go from there accordingly.
have faced similar vibration issues on my f10 535d.
have been though a few sets of wheel and tyres in the last couple of months, new discs and pads at the front, rear diff bushes, lower arms, an OSF wheel bearing and i still have vibrations through the front floorpan and steering wheel. my issue is now accompanied by a noise that i had originally put down to a wheel bearing but have since ruled that out. Will be looking at the prop shaft couplings next. had originally ruled them out as they all look relatively new.

I had the exact same vibration you are referring to and was told its from the front end... but the tension struts at the rear were the cause so i would honestly consider looking at them. I was at the exact stage you are at with prop shaft but this was checked through by BMW and they said it was fine. have been though a few sets of wheel and tyres in the last couple of months, new discs and pads at the front, rear diff bushes, lower arms, an OSF wheel bearing and i still have vibrations through the front floorpan and steering wheel. my issue is now accompanied by a noise that i had originally put down to a wheel bearing but have since ruled that out.
