2 Series Grand Tourer Thoughts
Discussion
Do not go for the 218i you will hate it! Its so lethargic and the economy is terrible. We had a 218i grand tourer for 4 years from new, apart from the aforementioned engine and fuel economy it was great, never saw more than 27mpg though!
We now have a new 220i gran tourer m sport Auto and its better on fuel than the 218i was.

Isnt it a MINI? Rather makes a nonsense of BMWs boast about never making inferior front wheel drive cars.
Yes, it's a Mini Countryman. BMW haven't boasted about not making FWD cars for years. They never said inferior (which remains subjective).944 Man said:
I saw this earlier:

I'm unsure what it says exactly, but it certainly does not hold them in high regard.
It says "this magic wand turns a sports car into a people carrier"! Less about BMW, more about how kids I'm unsure what it says exactly, but it certainly does not hold them in high regard.

With regards to the boast in question: it may not be particularly recent but it is still a relevant point.
Not sure. That's where their marketing was at back then, not where it's at right now as they finally conceded that a Golf-sized RWD hatch wasn't a winner, and RWD was a non-runner in the MPV segment.Touring442 said:
It's alright as Zafiras go, and that's all it is. It's not a BMW as such. They've not been a roaring success as Kia etc do the same thing for less - so there are deals to be done. Lots are sold on Motability.
It's an averagely alrightish box on wheels but you could do better.
That's my feeling also as I don't see what the BMW USP is here, over and above the badge? It's an averagely alrightish box on wheels but you could do better.
I'd probably save the money and buy a cheaper & better specced Korean equivalent tbh.

The good old days My father in law has one.
I really wanted to hate it but it’s not that bad if you accept it for what it is. It seems pretty spacious inside and I’m jealous of his sync buttons for the A/C (they need to be the same...
)
His is the 18i, it’s not fast but he drives bloody slowly anyway, he’s really pleased with it. Both of the in laws are getting on a bit now; he has a dodgy knee and my mother in law had a hip replacement in 2019 and they find it easy to get in and out of.
Not sure what the issue is platform sharing with MINI is. My MINI’s have always been pretty good to drive. It’s no worse than VAG selling the same car at four different price points.

How do I put this? I hate them.
I have driven many and they are awful, not BMWs in the accepted sense. They are nasty to drive, especially the manuals. I honestly cannot think of any endearing qualities.
The materials used are also cheaper than you would expect. Usually I would be the first to recommend a BMW but in this case I would avoid.
