So I'm new to the forum, but have seen a number of posts that have an underlying tone to owners of 335D's, particularly remapped ones.

I'm not sure what is or has caused such negativity towards a car that i feel if it was petrol would be hailed as a "weapon".

The performance is what it is, there will be faster and slower cars as there are with all types, but it seems an equivalent BMW with such performance and a different fuel is acceptable, but because it's diesel it isn't?

I've also been reading other forums and it seems this is not an issue exclusive to PH. Particularly if an owner dares suggest a comparison for performance, it is almost as if a bomb is being set off.

Heres an example, I achieved a sub 4 second to 60 and a mid 11 second quarter mile out of my 335D. By all standards thats a pretty fast road car, but as it isn't an M3 or similar its an issue?

I think your car is great (apart from the dodgy timing chain and main bearings!) and my next car will be a 335d. (E91).

Some people like diesels, some don’t. Choose your car for you, not to satisfy anonymous forum users.

There is an in joke on PH about 335d owners, in particular those with mapped ones. It’s not personal.

I had a porsche with a dodgy IMS bearing and RMS and that worked out ok smile Timing chain and big ends are a walk in the park smile

I noticed that, hence the thread. Just seems to be a lot of heat towards something I'd expect a performance car forum to be more in the yay side, rather than nay

This.

Ages ago someone on here had a remapped 335d which he claimed would outperform pretty much anything, so the 335d then, with humour, became the benchmark against which all fast travelling objects (Bugatti Veyrons, fast jets, comets, etc.) were measured. It's a PH in-joke that's been running for years but if you're new here it'll go over your head and you might interpret it another way. There is no hate here for the 335d.

As mentioned, it’s a long standing joke on here, going back to circa 2008 smile

Fellow 335D owner here, and I think it’s a great car as a daily driver.

I'm comfortable with the car in terms of its driving ability. smile

I think he resurfaced briefly on a PH Facebook post....I made a quip about a remapped 335d being the fastest car in the world and a very irate chap got upset telling me it wasn’t funny then and the joke isn’t funny now. hehe

Ooohhhh yes it is.....

It was funny then and it will always be funny.

Every time I come across a 335d thread that's the first thing I think of - how fantastically fast and superior his car was to anything else on the road. Had me in stitches I swear. I wonder if he's still got it ?

Anyhow chap, have one of these beer, and take care of yourself.

That brings back memories.

The 335D is a brilliant family wagon as it's nippy and economical, and real world (including traffic) it's point to point as fast as any car.
Handling is fine for a family wagon, but not for a sports car. I can't imagine anyone being passionate about one.

This. They’re very quick in the real world, but it’s hard to get massively excited about it.

The reality is that they offer more performance than anyone would reasonably need.

Agree. I had a 640d and it was pretty quick and it offered a lovely performance/economy mix I thought. However I found myself wishing that it was either the 640i/650i or M6 model for most of the time though! biggrin

I respect a diesel engine for sure, but I find it really difficult to feel much emotion/excitement for them though. I can't imagine many people waking up early on a Sunday morning and wanting to take either a 335d or a 640d out for a drive just for the sake of it.

I always think of Wills2 on here regarding the 335d xdrive. He has had some lovely cars and I remember when he got his 335d xdrive Touring...he pretty much instantly disliked it. He thought that the handling was quite boat like, and he felt that the engine was a little uncouth as well. He couldn't wait to get rid of it.

Sums it up really. Except now if you're looking for a soulless way to accelerate quickly you'd buy a Tesla Model 3 these days...?
