What is the minimum reasonable miles per day I can do in one of these without clogging the dpf/otherwise damaging the engine...I am doing about 10 miles per day only on roads that average about 50mph

Are you looking to buy or do you have one in use?.10 miles is only just enough to get the engine to the right temp for starters on these I reckon Certainly wouldnt buy one on those miles. I have an f30 30d 25k a year a lot of motorway and it drives like a dream on those miles.

I would otherwise be considering a V8 (petrol) but prices of those even less than 15 years old has gone ballistic through the pandemic....I think there is still.real value/performance in the big diesels as a result of dieselgate etc. Keen to hear of anyone that has one and has done short trips, and if removing the dpf is the way to go? Or is that an MOT fail?!

Not quite as short as your trip, but my F30 does a 12.5 mile journey to work each day (25 mile round trip) Half at 30 mph, the other half at 40 mph.

On cold days, the oil doesn’t get to full temperature, and that’s a 25 mile trip with traffic lights etc. But the car’s been fine for the 2 years I’ve had it.

Thats low miles for a diesel but to be fair I never read/hear any major dpf issues on the 3.0 bmw engine. It seems to be one of the best systems around.

I know this won't help, but I am lucky because my E46 (320d 2002 Touring) doesn't have a dpf
filter. I do the same mileage that I did in my SEAT Arosa (the car that preceded the Touring) around
3,000 - 4,000. And before you mention it; the car was offered to me for a ridiculously low price by
my sister back in 2012. It had (and still has) a full service history, so was a bargain I couldn't resist.
It gets driven about twice a week, but I do try to take it a couple of junctions down the motorway
to get some miles in. It's a luxury car that I would never have bought had this opportunity not have
presented itself to me.

Re my f30 30d car I am so unhappy and annoyed ,had from new 64 plate still a great car even with 150k on it.However I live in London and when Mayor soppy khanT gets in again come may elections he will go through with his ULEZ plan to extend it another 10 miles out to the n and s circular meaning I will have to go from freehold to paying for another car I do not want or need or since covid I can ill afford because it does not meet his emmissions.

With these the idea is to get the engine oil up to temperature and keep it there as long as you can. The minimum would be 10 minutes at temp.

Mileage is a small part of the story. Driving style and conditions more. A 10 mile journey on a combined cycle would be completely different to an urban cycle.

My 335d was driven 15 fast miles each morning. I lived on a country lane so was up to national speed, and then it was nothing below 40. I got to work in 20 minutes but was up to temp by 7-8 minutes. Winter saw it to 12-15 and I took a longer route to make it to 25 minutes.

Never had any dpf issues.

Another approach some suggest is to drive your normal miles in the week and then make a longer journey on the weekend of at least half hour and preferably not city.

Whilst those miles aren't ideal, it's not an issue as long as you do a longer run ideally once a week, but even few weeks, if it's a bit longer and gives the DPF a chance to do the cycle fully you shouldn't have any issues.

All engines, not just diesels, don't particularly like lots of short journeys where they don't get up to temp, but as long as they get decent longer runs on a fairly regular basis they usually cope ok.
