Very concerning as it’s the same generation as my M4 which means mine can also be stolen without a key.

The 3 series is a poverty spec luxury model without the comfort access/keyless entry so it’s quite baffling as to how the thieves managed to get in it and start it without setting an alarm! I’d understand if it was an 1989 fiesta that can be hot wired but a 2012 3 series?

The area in which it was parked seems to have a lot of thieves operating (surbiton) as another friend of mine had his sunglasses stolen, they smashed the window for a pair of ray bans, anyways, where I live is a quiet village but I’m still going to invest in a steering wheel lock.

Does anybody else have a steering wheel lock? Is there any recommended brands of the locks where they’re small and easy to put on/take off

Disklok , not small ,but easy to use and good visible deterrent protection .

Yes .they can be overcome by the determined thief but it's a good device .

I have 2 Diskloks , I could let you have one for a small fee ,don't live too far from Surbiton .

Another vote for the disklock.

It’s a pain in the arse at times but they are genuinely rated by coppers I know. It won’t stop a determined scumbag but will hopefully put off an opportunist.

Are you sure they actually got in it not just dragged it? (although I suspect the alarm would have gone off hmm).

There is a lot of questions there, as most of the known methods tend to involve window smashing.

Well it’s only a base old man spec brown 320i, I mean not saying it’s a terrible car but that sounds like a lot of effort!

I think early F30 (and other) models had a vulnerability on the OBD port that allowed someone to program a new key into the car. They simply drive it away then.

It was fixed on later versions, but not sure if older ones got a security patch or not.

Can't he track it on the ConnectedDrive app?

I can do this on my 2015 model...although you have to have enabled the GPS tracking function in iDrive?

My 66 plate doesn’t have that feature.

I have been using a disclock for well over 20 years and can recommend. Alternatively I can also recommend the Ghost Immobilser. It was the first thing that we had fitted to the wife’s Evoque. Simple to use and no sign that it’s fitted so a prospective thief won’t even know to try and start looking for it.

Maybe the option has move but I have done the same on my 2016 BMW. The ODB hack has been fixed by BMW, you would need to check with them if you need a firmware download though.

You can’t make this st up

He just came in it and I said what happened?! He said the police found it 3 roads away and I said how/why/when then he says he thinks he may have mis parked it

Sorry for wasting your time guys however I’m still getting the disklock so thanks for the recommendations

So that 'Find My Car' option on the app would have really helped smile

Common practice, nick it, park it up not far away and wait to see if it has a tracker and gets recovered. If not, return x days later and take it, if it is recovered nothing lost.

Will they comeback, uncertain.

From that alone it has been taken by a gang with knowledge and are probably organised crime, as opposed a bunch of opportunists

Happened to my next door neighbour. She parked her Polo a couple of streets away from her friend's
house. They went into a nearby pub for a few drinks. The following morning she couldn't find her car
from where she thought she parked it, so called the police and informed her insurance company.

Five days later the person whose house it was parked in front of reported it to the police, who informed
my embarrassed neighbour to collect it.

Mmm now thats not going to make it look like a 20 year old fiesta.

Unfortunately older F30 still have the key information that can be read from the OBD, so those in the know can easily create a clone key. Around 2015/2016 this was changed and you can't clone the keys, not sure if there was any firmware back port or not.
