M440i or 8 series - advice please
Discussion
Could anyone share experiences of the new 4 series - likely to be the M440i or the M435d v’s the 8 series 40i or 40d.
Interested in the quality of drive and build quality and any feedback on my haves on either car. Looks to me that the 8 is the best value as comes loaded and discounts really strong compared to the 4’s to spec a M440i to 8 series spec makes it a crazy price.
Moving from X4m Comp after 16 months of fun and harsh riding and rattling and sold this car which has appreciated in price in the last 6 months, really welcome your experiences please

Whilst I’m unable to share experiences (F36 440i owner from new 2017) I’m also looking at what next and those are the exact same two I’m comparing and would especially love to get back in to a vert now that my kids are a bit older albeit no idea what the 4er convertible will look like yet.
My problem with the 8er is that I’m naturally inclined to look at the m850i m-lite as the range topper (d’oh) however I do recognise that the £££ gap between a 420i/d and then 440i/435d is significantly less so than when comparing a 840i to m850i.
For the research I’ve done, the 8er interior wins hands down (glass gear knob etc - it’s in the 5/7/8 luxury build class) however I have also read that dimensions are massive and you have to think carefully before buying such a big (long) car.
I also did a carwow on the m550i and a £71k car goes down to £59k albeit with absolute base spec. Another alternative but it pains me to see GFV of something like £25k after 4 years lol.
Following this thread with interest.

I looked at the 435i/440i vs 640d/i which is the spiritual predecessor of the 8 series. I plumped for a 4 series primarily because of usability. The 6/8 series are, without doubt, the better car in abstract with much better ride/interior/build etc but the 4 series is still very good and so much more usable. I car park my 4 series in the local supermarket with no problem and navigate tight turns etc with impunity. Not something that can be done with the 6/8. Were I looking for a weekend car it’d be the 6/8 every day but if it’s the first car the 4 series wins hands down.
Have tested an 840d and M440i in the last couple of weeks (looking to change from a high spec V60)
The 8 is a brilliant GT - very easy to drive(you don’t really notice the size of the car either, seats are so comfortable and cabin quality is as you would expect in such a car.
The 4 was a lot more engaging though. A lot more fun down B-Roads and just as capable on dual carriageways etc. No noticeable drop in cabin quality either (IMO) - even my wife had a good laugh behind the wheel of it
Personally, my choice would be the 4. Coming from the V60 there wasn’t enough engagement/of a difference with the 8.
As ever, all depends on what you’re looking for! Hope that helps
Do agree that the financials between the two are a little baffling and the 8 is a lot of car the money (comparatively)

Useful feedback, I’ve had 640d too and Audi S8 so the size isn’t a problem.
Interesting views and quality is good to hear re 4’s. Looking at spec the 8’s have so much more and prices are almost comparable once you get good discount on an 8 and spec a 440 to the same level.......
Did the 4 series ride much harder on the roads ?
Time to talk to some dealers to see what the numbers look like and who is keen to do a deal.

The ride on the 4 was firmer than the 8, but not harshly so.
Sound wise, the 8 was more subdued than the 4 (but kind of expected that)
I took an X3M out as well, so if you’re coming from an X4M, you’ll feel the difference with either (personally I didn’t have a problem with the ride in the X3M - but there’s a helluva difference between a test drive and daily use I’m sure!)

Good to hear, I can live with the X4m all day and love the car to bits, its hard but its fine - I cant deal with the really poor build quality, everything rattles and the dash has been out twice and the sunroof and rear shelf constantly chatter over any uneven roads, given I live 6 miles into some wonderful country roads I have done so well to stick the car for 16 months. - guess lockdown defiantly helped.
Standard car is pretty good spec, added comfort pack and panoramic roof - the roof transforms the light in the car and it great.
X4m averaged 24 mpg over my 9,700 miles, the engine is amazing happy chilling in traffic and flying when required whilst delivering some wonderful sound.
The leather (Merino) is the best quality in the vehicle, I’m not impressed with the Harmon Kardon set up, much better in my wife’s 235 GC and was much better in 640d.
Michelin PS4’s incredible grip when required.
If the build was like a 6 series or as you say the 8 the car would not be going anywhere.
The car is a monster, goes under the radar every day, mine was a Friday build unfortunately but I’d recommend the vehicle subject to build !!

Carwow dreaming today and here’s what came up for the convertible FYI and cheapest at Barrett’s Canterbury (yet I’m based in south west)
M850i Ultimate = £99612
M850i base = £86862
840i Ultimate = £74886
840i base = £62136
No idea on the GFV and if it is indeed significantly higher than the m440i, then the monthly payments assuming PCP would be perhaps more favourable.
Just one observation on the “ultimate” spec versions, I saw these on the F series M4 as the last run out model, i.e every option ticked for the last production model before the G series came along. I don’t know what the significance of Ultimate is on the 8er - i.e do they always do this on range topping models or is it a model on its way out (??). PS this is just from carwow anyway.
