So my mate just bought a 2005 118d for his misses. He's been telling me about how fast it is because it's an 'm sport model'. I wasn't sure if the early 1 series cars came as an m sport especially the diesel version's so could anyone tell me if they did or not? Usually i wouldn't question it but this guy literally lies about everything.

I am fairly sure they did, but all M Sport means is different bumpers, seats, wheels, and firmer suspension. The actual engine and gerbox are exactly the same as any other 118d.

What type of seats would it have?

The 2009 model we had was the SE spec but with MSport seats and suspension. So it was hard to tell what it was other than the body kit and looking up the details at BMW. The body kit should be the obvious clue as the other poster said, no extra power for MSport.

He's lying about it being fast! But yes, you can get an M Sport version of almost any BMW, and no, they're no faster than a SE or Sport.

What would M sport seats look like? Would they be leather or something?

Ours weren't leather but there were more sporty ( = back breaking and uncomfortable). I don't have any pictures, I hated that car.

The sports seat would have a pronounced bolster on the base and seat back with an electric bolster width adjustment. The standard seats look as flat as a park bench.

The 2005 118d was 120bhp, 0-60 in 9.7s so not fast but depends on his previous car. I suppose it may have been remapped at some point. The 2007 model had 140bhp and 0-60 in 8.6s which I'm sure could be matched by remapping a 2005 model.

I completely misread the year... In 2005 you got a Sport. They didn't call them M Sport until later... maybe 2006/7. But... they were never badged Sport (or M Sport). If he has any M badges on the rear bootlid, they're fake!
If you want to find out what he really has, put the registration into something like https://cartaxcheck.co.uk/. That'll tell you what the V5 says.

My first BMW was an 04 plate E46 320td SE Compact that had the "Sport" seats and just 150bhp! With a mere 120 bhp why would you need M-Sport seats anyway?

Next was a 57 plate 123d SE "Dynamic" with 201bhp, M-Sport seats and suspension.

A couple of photos of "Sport"and "M-Sport" seats here on E85/86 Z4s here:-

Chav tractor if I ever saw one. Usually vaping out of the window under wind deflectors.

Ironically it does have wind deflectors. I think it does look pretty nice though.
