Morning,
I need to replace my Volvo XC90 Diesel to a Euro 4 or above petrol before October. This is due to the Bristol clean air zone. I’ve had several estates over the years Volvo, Audi and now fancy a Touring. They are always handy having the larger loading space and I prefer the look of them.

I’ve been looking at 2009 to 2012 E90 touring , seems to be a fair few about and I’m not scared of the high miles seen on lots of them and more than happy to buy something that needs some TLC.

What I need help with is understanding the chain driven ones, what a chain rattle sounds like, which ones are likely to fail and If I find one with over 100K is it likely that the chain will now never fail on these or had already been replaced.

Really not worried about spec but I would like leather and not fussed about missing Idrive or sat nav.

I’m I a mug or is there some value to be found in 10 year old 3 series. I’m hoping to get around £2000 for the Volvo and perhaps a budget pushing £6000. I don’t really want to go down the 325 or 330 route, I have a 630 and is £600 VED as is the Volvo so hoping for some cheaper running costs..... unless a 325 is cheaper VED and much better engine reliability wise.

Thank you

Sorry to be a doom monger. But do a search for “N43 problems”, then run away.

This ^^^

Wouldn't touch either with a barge pole; stick to the 325 or 330 IMO

^Inclined to agree with the above.

4 cyl models = issues+++ and in worst case scenario can write off a car.

On page 2 of this very section for example: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Apart from the cheaper VED and presumably improved mpg, can't see a reason to go for one vs the 6 cyl models. E91 6 cyl petrol models are commanding strong money of late though.

Thanks for the hints.... I’ll look for something else!
