G11. Talk to me.
Discussion
Currently farting around in an F01 ‘Luxury’ spec which, spec wise, is right up there. I’ll be looking to move onto a G11 shortly and don’t want to downgrade and lose some of the features I currently have. Particularly the radar guided adaptive cruise control, which either is very rare on G11s or is standard? None I can see for sale have it or it isn’t in the listing at least, I can’t see a radar anywhere for it, and a Google search doesn’t really yield much about whether it comes with it. So, anyone know?
Is air ride standard on them all, if so were steel coils ever an option, or are they all on air?
Anyone with a 740e plug in hybrid that can give an accurate picture of both the electric only range and the motorway long journey consumption would also be useful. Does it self charge on longer journeys? How long does this take? Happy to be petrol only most of my driving as it’s mainly on the motorway, then electric round town.
Thanks!

Hi,
Funnily enough, I got mine three days ago
First ever BmW (not counting my Mrs’ 2020 3 series).
Previously on Vauxhall VXR8s for the previous 12 years.
Bearing in mind the last car was a supercharged 850bhp V8 and full of thrills does the current car live up to expectations (bearing in mind I had not driven the Seven before I ordered)?
Yes, I love it!
Although MSport Professional, the car is however lacking some spec when compared with 320i Msport:
- it does not read speed signs
- no lane departure warning
- no blind spot warning (ok, we don't have that in the 3, but I had had it in a ‘15 vxr8. Really useful)
Engine being 745e does deliver. Sprint to 99mph does not feel sluggish. Yes, it’s not a Golf R, but obviously it is not a point. Travelling at 130mph (Autobahn of course) feels as relaxing as listening to birds chirping in the park. But you would know this already (having been driving a big lux sedan).
Mpg on the motorway at 70mph is 40mpg +. At 99mph (Germany of course) is between 33 and 38mpg. Both on an empty battery.
You can force it to charge the battery, but mpg drops to mid twenties. I am still to establish if this will pay off in extra mpg later one once charged.
Overall, fantastic car. I have never had anything as nice as this, but then I have never had German luxury cars, so my point may be of little value in this comparison;)
PS. The boot is tiny. Probably as big as the 320i volume wise due to the battery. Perhaps this is the only let down of a massive sedan, but that I knew before I committed to purchasing.
Ask away if I could share any more
Bart

Oh nice, congrats. Glad you’re enjoying it, I’ve had a couple of 7s and always find them a good balance between luxury and actually being nice to drive. Does yours have adaptive cruise?
Also it’d be my first four pot for a while in perhaps a car not traditionally suited to them, do you notice it at all? My only experience of a charged four cylinder from BMW is in a 125i and it sounded a bit rough, tapping due to the direct injection.
Shame about the boot but not the end of the world for me personally.

They all have air suspension as standard and adaptive cruise is an optional extra, on the pre LCI it was contained within the driving assistant plus pack and contained in the tech pack on the LCI model as "driving assistant professional" So I'd look for those packs rather than a standalone adaptive cruise control option. Both are £3000 options so can be rare.

I'm 3 months in to a 745e, ex BMW corporate car. Picked it up with 1500 miles on it - its fully loaded with all the driving/display/tech packs and laser lights.
Huge fan of the car. I moved from a Guila QF and while, obviously, a very different experience, but it is rapid enough for its size. My only complaint, and it is small, is that the steering feel is quite numb due to the lane assist, which can be quite aggressive at times. Although, it can be turned off or the sensitivity reduced.
Avoid the 740e, the 2 litre engine is too small for the car. Stretch the budget for a 745e if you are going hybrid.
As mentioned above, the recharge function is something I am still playing with, but I find it is best used when cruising at motorway speed only. If using in stop/start or acceleration/deceleration traffic, it does hurt mpg, but definitely brings value with motorway use and then moving to city driving.

Ive got a G11 740d xdrive....its really quite a perfect all round car
Good to drive, loads of tech, superb sound system, good presence and looks with the bigger M sport wheels, very comfy seats, and doesnt feel huge to drive
The only criticism is that the steering isnt up to the usual BMW standard and feels a bit more m.benz like
You soon get used to it though..mine has massage seats/soft close/cooled seats (dont know of thats standard ot an option)...no adpative cruise but its not something that really interests me
For the money 2nd hand its an unbeatable and truly lovely way to travel
Had mine detailed and it looks stunning.

Excellent, thanks. Had another look and seems the radar is centre lower grille on the G11 rather than a smaller unit in the kidney grille as on the F01. Guessing it’s bigger due to lane keep assist. Very good system though and not sure I can live without it now. Much lazy. Both are £3000 options so can be rare.

Interesting the hybrid changed, wonder if BMW conceded the 2.0 wasn’t enough for the car, or maybe the 6 pot supported the battery better. I’d love a 745e in theory, but I can’t see past the grille which is a shame.
Equally happy with a 740d really which may be a reality given the very few 740e’s there are, as well as wanting a rare spec choice. Do feel the diesel idle kinda takes away from this sort of car mind, and 740i’s in standard wheelbase seem nonexistent.

The grille was my worry too, but black chrome as part of a professional pack seems to have addressed it rather well 🥰I'm one of those people that really like but I understand that it's a bit marmite, I've got a Dravit grey one with chrome grilles on order like this one, they were doing a great lease deal on a 730d M sport for under £500 a month, when you factor in the 5 years free servicing and VED it makes it a very good deal.
