Hello all,

I’m thinking of switching from my 2011 X5 to a 2015 33D touring, on paper seems like an excellent combination of fun and affordable running costs.
The X5 achieves a spectacular 25 mpg on average, I am a little heavy footed, I was just wondering what kind of MPG people get from their 335D?
Anything I should look out for when shopping around for a 335D?
I have a little under £20K to spend, and input would be greatly appreciated.

Currently getting 44mpg on an F30 335d. For your £20k you should just be able to squeeze an F31 post LCI with EU6 emission levels. You MUST ensure you get EU6.

F30 335D long term average is 35-36 mpg

Motorway use always gets it into the 40’s.

I have a 66 plate F31 335d, i get 30mpg locally, mid to high 40's on motorway.

With the budget, depends on what spec you want. Cars with more options tend to command higher prices, it took me 3 months to find the one I now have (purchased mid May this year).

MRS400 dailys our X4 30D and averages 35/36 and on a run its about 42.

And thats built like a brick.

I expected more from the 3 series

Not sure how accurate the computer is on these, my last full tank did 450 miles before I refilled. It cost £64.75 to refill (49.5 litres) so that's 41.25 mpg - computer stated 44.1mpg.

Mine was pretty optimistic.

I changed the coefficient to 1065 in the hidden menu, to get it accurate.

Edit… Based on the figures you posted, and presuming yours is currently set to 1000, it needs changing to 1069

Interesting, I've not been into the hidden menu on this one yet. Used it on our older E91 330d though.

I'll have a look a bit later, thanks for the heads up.

Agree, I would be disappointed getting less than 500 miles a tankful.
Regards the pictures of the inst. cluster, I think 1250 to 1300 rpm is the lowest revs it will go without changing down, so 58mph is probably the best speed for lowest fuel consumption.

39.2mpg on my trip computer with 15 months of driving to the supermarket and back sometimes taking the long way round to warm it up and give it some beans.

My wife's 335d has stayed resolutely above 40mpg with a mixture of short Waitrose runs, school pick ups and a some longer family trips. My 420d is can be anywhere between 45 and 60 mpg depending on short v motorway runs. So on that basis, the 335d is mighty impressive for something with 300+bhp.

Having had the 335d for 4.5 years, then in summary:-
I would not want less torque,
I don’t need more power.
In achieving those the fuel consumption is pretty reasonable.

2018 335D xDrive Touring, two years in, new to me, 11,690 miles at an average of 40.14mpg. Best on one tank 45mpg when I first got it. Mixture of driving with a fair bit of shopping and station run etc. Some long runs but not a tank's worth.

Yesterday I took a long trip. I set the cruise to 65 mph, and the road was pretty empty for a long relaxing cruise, with one or two overtakes above 65mph. There was a 50mph limit for a few miles, but still free flowing. The trip computer showed 63.5mph average speed, and 55mpg. That was also trying BP Ultimate diesel, because the trip gave me the chance to chuck a tankful in. The overall computer was showing 47mpg when I got home. The on-board computer may read over, but I would not think that much.

All depends on the journeys for me. 552 miles is the best from a tank, 47mpg

Always does over 40 mpg on the motorway.

My 12.5 mile commute across the city also returns over 40mpg in the early hours of the morning. But in the Afternoon, a queue in the works car park, and getting stuck in the school traffic, almost certainly drops it below 30 mpg

The trip computer was optimistic to the tune of 3 mpg, before I adjusted it. It’s been bang on ever since.

After an X5 you should drive the 335d and think about space and overall car ability comparisons rather than just MPG... a x5 is a nice place to be, so is a 335d but an X5 comes as standard with many must have options that the 335d doesnt and many 335d's were leased on bog spec.

A 335d touring boot is no where as big as an x5 as well and the rear space is much larger as well.
