I was planning to buy a Golf GTI but the latest interface was a dealbreaker for me - no buttons, seemingly endless sub-menus on the touchscreen and daft haptic “buttons” on the steering. There is even a touch slider for volume which is unlit at night. Bonkers. It’s fine until you try and do it whilst driving! Whoever designed it clearly lost the plot. I ended up with the M135i and love it. The infotainment system is far better - the iDrive system works very well and is far easier to use on the move, and the interior in general is way better in quality. By the way, a fairer comparison for the GTI would probably be the 128Ti - there are lots of recent road tests comparing the two. The only problem might be getting hold of one.

My lad has the m135 xdrive. I have a 540i xdrive myself.

It may not be to everyones taste, design wise and there are mechanical changes from the old model. Some will say that it’s not a real bmw.

bks is what i say, i’ve driven and owned many bm’s over the years and they are evolving.

The M135 xdrive is a cracking car, i really enjoy driving it. It is comfortable when you need it too be, and a bit of a hooligan if you want as well. Are there compromises, yes, but there is with every car out there. The positives FAR outway the negatives imo.

I really struggle with the looks of the M135i but one thing I can’t criticise is the interior. It’s really nice and bloody well made, it’s a huge step up from previous cars. The idrive is brilliant too (but I liked the previous version I had in my 140i).

The interior alone with actual buttons would get me into the BMW over the Golf. The Mk8 isn’t a particularly good looking car and the interior is not to my tastes at all plus there are the obvious areas of cost cutting.

The M135i is more of a Golf R competitor than that of the GTI. Personally I’d not discount the 128ti.

I've had mine since January and have put 9k on it.

As Court_S says , it's not the most beautiful rendition from BMW .

Having said that . Build quality swayed me over from the Merc A135..

Its worth mentioning the AWD is not a 50/50 bias. More like a 60/40 bias to the front end.

The build quality of the latest A class is piss poor. A friends wife has an A250 and I’m always surprised at how flimsy the interior is whenever he brings it to work. The latest 1 series is worlds apart.
