E86 Z4 Coupe glove box hinges for a 57 plate
Discussion
A mate of mine's glovebox lid just about dropped out the other day.
He sent me some pictures and it appears one of the hinges has broken (and missing as he can't find anything in the footwell) as well as the damper retaining clip has broken. I can find the part number for a new damper clip, 51167112135.
But, the parts shown as the hinge pins, 51458397589 & 51161828956 look different to what's left in the car. On the damper side, he still has what looks like a hollow arrow head (best way to describe it) sticking out which I assume the lid mounting hole pushes onto.

On the other side he has what looks to be a grommet, which could be p/n 51458397589.

He's had the car for about 18 months and says the glovebox never soft opened, i.e. he had no idea it should be damped. I'm starting to wonder if a previous owner bodged a repair and the remaining "hinge" isn't standard.

The pictures on realoem are not that clear, but I think the hinge on the right is correct.
Looking at the pictures I would think that the fitting process is something like this:
Hook the glovebox on to the protruding pin on the right.
Slide the glovebox up, till the protruding bit with the hole lines up with the grommet on the left
Push in pin 51458397589 (No 10 in realoem)
Push in pin 51161828956 (No 12 in realoem) this goes inside pin 10 and secures it all.
This assumes you can get to the other side of the grommet when the glovebox is in place?
And apologies in advance if the above is a load of rubbish...
This is what I am looking at in realoem:

The back of the socket that that splined rod goes into have snapped.
In my case I epoxied it back on, but it went again a couple of years later and I couldn't find the piece again. It's fiddly, but doable, and after doing it twice, it might be easier to take the whole thing off and do it on the kitchen table.
Here are some instructions (from Pelican Parts) for a LHD model. (although looking at the images, I think they have a knee-airbag which makes the instructions slightly wrong for a UK model.
After the 2nd incident I ended up buying the whole glovebox housing (6961766) + drawer/lid (6961763) from a breaker (ASWR) for £45. Had to swap over the locking mechanism though.

Yes, realoem is where I got the part numbers from. It’s a shame they couldn’t get the pictures correct. But, that’s life 😄Looking at the pictures I would think that the fitting process is something like this:

Ta, as the parts are pretty cheap I have suggested he order them and see what arrives. Regarding the fitting, I assumed you have to take the whole assy out, refit the lid, slide the pins through the glove box assy and then put it all back. You don't have to, but it's easier than trying to cajole the pin back in to the correct position with a really tiny tool (I used a craft knife blade the first time I did it).Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
