Help!

Hi, I have brought a very good low mileage 850CSi. They are; it seems a very rare beast; it's a fantastic drive. I am going through a complete refresh, engine and box out, strip clean replace reassemble to be as 'factory new' as possible. Issues are mostly cosmetic, with anything aged or slightly suspect replaced.

The clutch is actually fine. But, whilst everything is apart, we might as well put a new one in.

The trouble is I cannot find one!

Can anyone help?

Have you tried BMW? Cotswold BMW are very good (mention 1 of many forums for a dicsount).

Also RealOEM for part numbers: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=EG93...

It is also mandatory for you to post a pic of such an epic machine.

I had just collected it and there was the scary few miles watching for warning lights, leaks, and problems. 150 miles without an issue.

They are fine looking machines.

Well done.

M539 on youtube has done some work on a couple of these, he knows the 12 cylinder engines very well.

As others have said realoem for parts and m539_restorations on instagram is the Youtube man and he may be able to help with where to get hard to get parts.

Lovely - that is a real rarity!

I last saw one at a PHSS at Mercedes Benz worldback in 2013.

Good luck with your search for a clutch. thumbup

The other thing that might be worth investigating is getting the original clutch re-lined.

Car SOS - Ford Cortina. They took the old clutch to a specialist who basically refaced the clutch with new lining material.

Not sure if this helps.

i have just had set of Porsche 928 dual and single disc clutches re-furbed by Helix Autosport. The new friction disc material has ZF stamps on them smile The throw-out bearings that I bought from OPC South London were actually made for Porsche AG by Helix on an exclusive contract and come with 2yrs Porsche Warranty. What Helix don't know about clutches is not worth knowing....

PhoenixMotorsport have clutches for the E31 850 and CSi to order in 6 stages, from replacement street use to full race paddle clutches.

What a great purchase! That's a proper dream car right there...

I've been on the hunt for just this, a BMW V12 clutch. As you've found and it's my understanding that they stopped making new OEM V12 clutches 6+ years ago. Most performance BMWs are 240mm clutch and this is 280mm and is unique to the V12, which is why I think they just stopped making them.

My application is slightly different, I've got a manual converted E32 750i with the normal 5.0 V12 and when I fitted the manual box I decided to get the original friction plate relined. This lasted around 1000 miles before this happened:

This happened around 3 months ago and I've got it all apart while I figure out what on earth to do. I've stopped thinking about it as I work on other projects but the car still needs a new clutch.

I've contacted the original clutch reliner but they just offered to do it again for the same money. CG clutches would be willing to look at it. I contacted TTV but got no reply and that's as far as I've got. Based on this thread I will contact Helix and Phoenix and see what they have to offer. If you have any luck then let me know and I'll do the same!

Ouch - they aren't going to be able to reline that! frown

I don't know if it helps but I did meet someone at a PHSS years ago who had a manual 650i which he said had the same gearbox as the manual V10 M5 and M6s that were offered in the US, which must have had a pretty robust clutch.

Anyway I hope you both manage to find one. thumbup

It's actually just the centre they need and they just rivet new fins and friction material onto the centre. My theory is the new metal fins from the last relining were not up to the task.
