Hi, my 1987 3 series need a bit of TLC.
headlight and windscreen washer system is not working. I have the BMW service handbook for their engineers, but how to replace washer system is not covered. I dont want to start taking bits of when not needed, so looking to get some direction how to do it. Headlight wiper motor is working, but wipers are not, so suspect a connection failed.

Fuel gauge is not working either, is always more then half full (very positive attitude) , luckily the reserve light comes on, but only when there is just a puff of petrol vapour left, so best to get the gauge fixed to get >2 miles warning to get to the pump.

Any ideas where i can get some instructions how to fix these 2 things?

Thanks!

The only advice I can give is on the fuel gauge.

It might be your sender unit that is stuck, take a look at this video which might help:

Thanks, clarification:
1/ No water to windscreen
2/ Water to headlights, but headlight wipers not moving even though the little motor is screeching very loud (so seems the connection to the wiper mechanism has failed)

This should help solve the headlight washer issues. Job for the bank holiday weekend

On the back of the fuel guage, there are 2 brass nuts that sometimes work loose from vibrations. They are actually the earth for the guage. If loose, they can cause the needle to do weird things.
Check those out.
and it's free.
