X1 F48 front disc and pads replaced 3 weeks ago, from which day they squealed on light braking to a stop.
"Let them bed in" said the dealer.
After two weeks 'bedding in' it was still there so they had it back but couldn't replicate the squeal.
Yesterday it was in again. They phoned. "We found the squeal but it's the rear brakes."
"No it's the front offside."
"No, it's definitely the rear brakes. Our Master Technician can hear things you can't. It'll need new discs and pads to sort, £370."
"But don't you think it's a bit of a coincidence the rears started squealing the day you fitted new FRONT brakes?"
"No. It's the rear brakes for sure."
"OK, fit them if you're sure it'll get rid of the squeal."
Collected car yesterday afternoon, paid £370 and headed off and... same squealing. Are you surprised?
Anyway, went back to dealer later having told service receptionist who we know well that it's coming in. As I entered the service tunnel I managed to hold a single squeal for its full length, echoing loudly throughout the service centre, as the receptionist came to meet me and walked along next to the squealing car. "It's the front offside" he said, and fetched his head tech (who'd heard it coming in) who also agreed.
How satisfying...

In law I'm entitled to a refund of £370 as their fix didn't fix the squeal. However the rear discs/pads were on an advisory from three weeks ago, allegedly discs below minimum spec.
I asked them to retain the discs to prove this but they "had already been disposed of" so they can't now prove this, nor can they return the car to how it was when refunding the £370.
I've emailed a complaint. The car is in next weds for the front brake pad change, FOC, and we'll no doubt agree a partial refund for the rears in view of the "early" replacement by perhaps a few thousand miles.
