I'm trying to understand what's going on with the bluetooth and related modules in a 2008 E60 5er. Partly because I'd like to get bluetooth working and partly because I'm technically minded and would like to know how it all works.

The car has 8" iDrive, Pro Nav and CDC so I've got a Dension 500 BT in there running a USB port which is working as planned, but with the bluetooth enabled on the unit through the dip switches this triggers an error 'SOS system malfunction', which does not occur with Dension BT off.

The car doesn't have any bluetooth capability as far as I can tell (in as much as I can't pair a phone with it, but there is a BT menu under 'communication' in iDrive). It does have S612 BMW Assist and S633 Business phone prep (I am aware this doesn't include the BT antenna and is essentially a powered cradle in the arm rest). it also has BMW online S616 and voice control S620.

I know in order to get Dension BT working I need to loop out the phone module from MOST bus, presumably this means the MULF unit in the boot which I have found. Apparently there is also a TCU unit for BMW Assist which I must have somewhere too , but haven't yet found it.

I'm really just curious to understand if I have no factory BT why is there a BT pairing menu in the iDrive; why if there is no factory BT does the Dension BT throw an error and how does all this stuff interact?

I've been reading the interweb about it all for days but obviously haven't got far enough or have missed something obvious.
