Hi Folks,

I'm going down South to see a BMW 325i for sale. It has 98,000 and a Full BMW history. I like making sure my cars are well looked after, and if something needs changed I don't mind getting it done, or doing it myself. I was hoping you would help me out on any recommendations you have for me. I have read up a fair bit about the car but you can't beat first hand knowledge from people who have owned one.

That's the face-lift car with the more fuel efficient engine.
Unfortunately its also the one thta has coil pack and injector problems. I found out the hard way and got shot of mine in 2 months back to the dealer. Not worth the price of sorting. Meanwhile a friend bought the older 330i which is seemingly much more solid.

I think they can have High Pressure Fuel Pump problems too, but the upside is I'm pretty sure they are only a remap away from 330i power!

Although when I was looking for my 330i I only considered early cars with the N52. Mine is currently on 115K and runs really well.

E90s are pretty good cars though - much more refined than E46s and less rusty!

As has been said above - 2009 = N53 engine so injector and high pressure fuel pump niggles. It's a 3.0 litre engine but detuned and badged 325i.

Otherwise usual E9X issues I suppose: Vanos solenoids, oil leaks, given the age watch for suspension bits and pieces. Shouldn't have rust.

The other viewpoint:

It's a lovely car to drive, a fraction of the cost of a new one and chances are it won't have injector issues. If it does, well, never mind. These are a really nice car, especially the auto. 98k with FSH means it's probably fine.

Buy and enjoy.

Thanks folks. Appreciated.
I have looked into the associated problems, and like Touring said, if it has a full BMW history chances are these issues might already been highlighted and checked. Hopefully.
I think if we all looked at any car that was 10+ years we could find issues that would put us off, we would never buy anything. I believe we just need to know what the hassles might be so we are prepared for them, or remedy them before they might come up.

You're right, full BMW history should be reassuring and as you say any car of this age and mileage may have future issues.

Good luck if you go for it. thumbup

If you can see evidence of the usual issues being dealt with in the history then happy days.

I probably missed out on a really good 630 this year because I was flapping about the HPFP a d NOX sensor gubbins. There was nothing in the history to say they had been done. Whilst I was thinking about it, someone just bought it. It was a really nice to be honest with good history etc.

Is the HPFP still a problem? I don't remember seeing any recent reports of problems. There was apparently a recall at some point, so at the very least I'd assume later cars would be good.

If the car doesn't have the latest index 11 injectors you probably want to budget for a replacement of all six. It's apparently also advisable to replace the coil parks, spark plugs, and NOx sensor. The injectors are £200 each, and the other stuff mounts up, so you'd probably rather not. But, if the car is cheap enough...

My 330i had all of the above replaced shortly after I bought it in 2017, though luckily not at my expense. It's been reliable since, and I haven't had to have anything surprising fixed.

I have checked the recalls and they all been done by BMW. I won't know about the other work until I see the invoices tomorrow. Here's hoping at least a couple of them might have been done.

Good luck with it. Hopefully it’ll be sound.

Hi,

Incase you haven't googled this yet, injector problems will manifest as a lumpy uneven idle from cold

(Harder to diagnose when the engine is warm)

Also, pushing on a bit, the check engine light would come on frequently, and the car hiccup and run a bit lumpy.

Less frequently it would lose power (massively) ie so even 70mph was hard to maintain. Clearing the error code with torque lite restored full power though.

Only twice did I see the "half power" error display though.

This was a 2009 e61 n53.

Checking injector numbers will be impossible without removing the engine cover...20 mins of faffing on my car (and 20 mins putting it back)

And the mythical "remap away from a 330" ... surprisingly few accounts of people having done this. I thought there would be more, as it is on my long list of to do items.
