Hi guys,

If I had my brakes serviced by someone who isn’t sytner, would it break my full dealer service history?

If its a fluid change then isn't it logged on the idrive? If its pads & discs then who's to say how long they will last?

Not if you use a different BMW dealer, other than Sytner

If you use a non-main dealer then it will break your full dealer service history.

Brakes are fairly uniform though - I wouldn’t qualm over them being done at an Indy (as I did with mine)

Technically yes, but I doubt most will notice or care. Whilst the brake fluid change is logged on the later cars idrive system, pads and discs aren’t (other than an estimate for when they need changing next).

I’m quite lucky being close to Sytner and a Rybrook. Service costs are much cheaper at Rybrook and service was better, just had the brakes done there last month (went in for fluid but needed pads as well).

At the very least get a quote somewhere else and see if they’ll match/reduce it.

When I asked the guy at Sytner, he seemed to suggest that doing the brake fluid from someone else breaks full main dealer service history, he then said the breaks can be serviced by anyone really. Does anyone agree with that?

I do for pads and discs. Because brakes are not logged in the idrive I don't consider them as part of the official service history. But brake fluid is logged, so part of it.

Pads and discs are relatively easy DIY too.

A good Indy will have the software to be able to update the iDrive. Mine does.

Thanks guys! I will find a local Indy to sort the brakes and then let Sytner carry on sorting the brake fluids.

Appreciate the steer chaps

This.

Exactly what we did with m other half’s F56 MINI. I nearly fell off my chair when MINI told me how much front pads would be. They did the oil service and I had a local garage do the pads for a fraction of the cost.

I'm interested in this as it is something that I started looking at a little while ago for my 640d.

A local BMW specialist was only about £15 cheaper for the pads compared to my local main dealer, Knights in Stafford. Knowing that they price match on tyres I am pretty sure they would do the same on pads etc. We all seem to have different experiences from main dealers and I have to say that Knights, Stafford have been pretty good. I've been using them since 2014 on 3 different cars.

What I also found out is that the iDrive only counts down brake pad wear based on miles covered. There is nothing that actually monitors pad thickness until you get down to the actual sensor. My car has been showing 3100 miles to go for the pads for ages and what the independent guy told me is that this is because it is geared up around KM and not miles. 3100 miles is 5000km.

I do have a question though - there is a chap on here who as a pretty well sorted F31 335D (blue and nearly 400BHP?) and he posted a picture after changing pads and the iDrive was displaying a message saying it was resetting. Is this self activated once you have changed the pads or do you have to action this?

Yup. MINI wanted over £200 to change the front pads….sod that. I ended up getting them done for less than half of that.
