Spurious error messages

My 1996 BMW 525i is showing spurious error messages. Sometimes it is one message (for example "Rear Lic Plate) sometimes a whole string of them
(handbrake,dipped beam etc). They disappear if I turn off the ignition sometimes reappearing immediately sometimes not.. Of course none of these are real.
It sounds like it might be a connector problem but which connector ?

Sound like a faulty ignition switch.

Could also be a faulty alternator not charging the battery properly.
