I have a 3 year old BMW X1 and the engine warning light has come on 4 times now. Each time it's the DPS that's causing it. BMW say its because I'm not doing enough mileage however I've done 18000 since new. Is there something fundamentaly wrong with the car or is this normal. Had I been told I could potentially have this problem I would have bought a petrol car.

Has anyone any suggestions and how do I stand because the cars not fit for purpose.

1. Its a DPF

2. Is it all stop start small journey town driving you do?
This will stop the dpf from getting hot enough to do its job properly.

3. 6000 miles a year is low for making a diesel economially viable compared to petrol

BMW are correct. You need to start doing longer journeys. 6000 miles a year doesn't really warrant a diesel if you are using the car daily. And your mileage is low enough to cause DPF issues.

Forte do a DPF cleaner which I used and it worked for me. I was using a diesel for short journeys in the main and fuel consumption went from 55 to about 30.

I used the Forte stuff and took it for a 30 mile drive. When I got out the car stunk from the Forte stuff I guess (as never smelt like that before or after) ... next tank of diesel and consumption back up to 50mpg.
