There is loads of information on the the f06 / f13 Facebook group

All depends what kind of driving you do?

It’s a big car, rear view camera is essential if I’m honest

Purchased from a dealer with no prep at the start of covid, have covered 20k

Thought it would be useful to split out what I have spent on purchasing, running and modifying in my 12 months of ownership.

Cost after 12 months and 21,000 miles

Purchase price £16,500

Maintenance/ serving cost:

Big service £343.00
Gearbox service £450.00
Oil change (outside of service) £160.00
Yellow grommet £40 plus my time to fit
Track rod ends and lower control arms £400 parts only
Manifold replacement £1250 (rod broke parts not available separately
Lower rear control arms £504.00

£3307.00

Tyres
Black lion bu66 £380 full set as a trial
PS4 current set £820 (total £1020 as I had to replace one after a pothole)
Front disks and pads £780.00 oem

Would have gotten away with one set of tyres

Upgrades

Bilstine b12 shock and springs including fitting and alignment £1400 for suspension and fitting, track rod end and lower control arms were fitted within this price

Carbon interior wrap (£180)
Retrim of steering wheel (£240 retrim £90 to swap all parts over. Will Do this myself next time)
Mmr billet aluminium paddles £210 honestly my favourite mod

Wagner intercooler £800 parts £160 fitting
Live map unicorn motorsport £499.00
K&n air filter £80

Spacers 15mm all round (£140)
Powder coat wheels (£240)
Wet spray Calipers bronze (£120)
Carbon from splitter £360 (bit chav but I like it)
Black grills £40
Rear silencer removal, replaced with stainless steel rear section £300
M sport carbon exhaust tips £140
Wet spray rear diffuser gloss black £80, I removed & prepped

Titan ceramic coat with 2 stage paint correction £600

Set of winter wheels and tyres £900

I also have a carbon rear diffuser to fit with quad pipes

Not going to add the total up as I may 😭

I change the oil every 6-7 k, running 381 bhp and 574lbft with tourque limited in the first two gears

Will return mid to late 40’s on a motorway run at 75 ish and 32 around town.

It is an easy car to do miles in

Hope this helps

Cheers, it’ll be mainly motorway miles as I commute nottingham to Eastbourne every Monday, it’ll get a good blast in between the big miles.

I bought a 2017 640d last year to replace a company 520d. I went for diesel thinking I may be commuting 120 miles a day a couple of days a week (not happening).

The d is very impressive in the areas you would expect. My overall is 43mpg, plenty of mid range grunt, very easy to do big miles. I also like the noise it makes inside. I haven’t driven a petrol version so can’t compare directly. I guess the petrol will be a touch smoother in exchange for lower mpg and torque.

There are far more diesels for sale so better choice. I wanted the run out model in Sonic Speed blue with a black interior with sport plus (H/K, privacy glass, 20” wheels). The car I bought (below) was AUC, low mileage and perfect condition. I would have liked a panoramic roof and soft close/electric boot but this car was too good to pass.

Superb car, looks fantastic and fairly good value.

I did 70k miles in a 2012 640d Coupe(took it from 15k to 85k miles) and I thought that it was a lovely mile muncher. It was a great looking car to my eyes too.

My only gripes were the ride on the 20" wheels(with runflats) over broken tarmac/pot holes. I did swap to normal tyres, but I suffered from a string of punctures on the normal tyres though, so if I had another one I'd stick with the runflats. The steering is also completely lifeless for me, and the size of the car needs some thought in car parks etc.

It is the best car that I've had in terms of a performance/economy mix though, and I was a really big fan of the ZF8 auto/engine combo as well. I still miss the car a lot.

I bought a 17 plate 640d SE GC in March 2020 with 24k miles on the clock. I’ve done 40k since and it shows an average mpg of 38.6.

M Sport is purely cosmetic so I bought my SE based on specification -

Comfort memory seats.
Nappa leather.
Soft close doors.
Adaptive lights.
HUD.
Heated steering wheel.
Parking assist.
HK audio.

Options that I would have liked are Adaptive Suspension and the 360 cameras.

One other reason for choosing an SE is that it runs on 18” wheels so slightly more compliant ride but also cheaper tyres.

It came with a full set of Dunlop’s and I’ve had Bridgestone and now a full set of Pirelli. Approx £160-175 a tyre.

Basic service at main dealer about £280 with bigger service £450, however I have started to change the air filter and pollen filters myself and this saves a fair chunk.

As others have said it’s a great car for long distances. I get 550 miles to a tank with nearly 700 being my best attempt.

Drive using the torque and engine breaking and the brakes last for ever. I’m on original discs and pads and still have 5mm left on the pads.

Off the mark it compares with my previous F31 330d but once underway the performance is pretty impressive for its size. Yes a remap will take it to 370bhp but I don’t consider this necessary.

Don’t expect to chuck it around on B roads, it’s too big. City centre multi-storey car parks often leave me with sweaty palms.

BMW offer a tow bar but I’ve been quoted £2k!

Great cars and good value. Mine had a list price of around £71k and I paid just under £25k when is was just under 3 years old.

Ive been looking at a few M sports, not many SE that have the extras on, but I may be looking in the wrong places, EBay seems to be higher priced to Autotrader oddly. Ive got a Jag XJ X350/1 in the workshop, so parking a barge isn’t an issue

640i, it’s big but looks nice and goes ok. 35mpg on a run, low twenties at best short journeys.

You can feel the 1800kg when trying to drive it spirited but it’s quick enough for a big car, usual comments re 20inch wheels and run flats. Makes a nice noise in sport mode, docile and quiet cruising in comfort mode.

Only 12k miles in (46k total) but no issues so far. The interior is lovely, mine is ivory (I think) leather which was a shock having always had black but I really like it. The chav wheel centres have been replaced with original ones. I doubt you will find a better choice big car for the money, shape, spec etc.

I bought a 640i SE GC late last year. Basic spec (relative in a 6er of course) but ultra low mileage and a full dealer history. It’s a very high quality place to be. I prefer petrol cars to diesels so I’m not too worried about the torque difference. In reality, it doesn’t make a huge difference anyway - and it sounds better. It handles pretty well for a big machine as well. I suspect the petrol is lighter at the front than the oil burner. Subtle, smooth and quick.

Mpg is nothing to write home about though but our other car is a Full Fat RR TDV8 and it beats that. whistle

One thing though. As it’s poverty spec, it rides on 18s and 245 tyres all round. Given I had a 996 a number of years ago with less power and 295s on the back, the TC gets a fairly regular workout especially in the wet. I’d like to put something wider on the back (275s) but it seems 245s are all I can do with 8” alloys. I’ll put refurbed 19s on (with non-RF) if necessary but I could do with not spending a fortune at the moment.

Any thoughts?

If you are going for a diesel, make sure it's Euro 6, otherwise you will be hit by congestion charge if venturing into cities. Late 2014 onwards should be ok, but do check what V5 says.
