Hi all,

Following on from my post on winter tyres, can I ask advice on here about the tyre pressure monitoring functionality on my F25 X3?

If I was to source some after market genuine BMW alloy wheels with winter rubber how would I go about pairing up/the compatibility of the TPMS?

As I understand it, in the setup on my X3, I have receivers on the inside of the wheel arches and then the sensors are basically the valve of the tyre. These then read the psi/bar on my iDrive.

If I was to purchase a genuine set of wheels/tyres off of eBay (I have seen a good set on there at the minute) with 7mm of winter rubber left, are star rated Dunlops, are run flats and also come with the sensor valves for the TPMS inc, I'm lead to believe that these then won't be compatible with my existing receiver module. So how would I pair them together (the third party valve sensors and my existing under arch recievers).

I appreciate any feedback. Cheers

They should pair automatically. You just need to do a reset of the TPMS in your iDrive.

I too bought a used set of (OEM) winter wheels and tyres off ebay for my F30 and despite what the seller said they didn't come with TPMS sensors. So I bought sensors set off ebay and had them fitted to the wheels, and they showed up in the iDrive after a TPMS reset.

On my F25 the tyre valves aren’t TPMS. The abs sensors are used to measure each wheel rotational speed and software detects anomalies and warns the driver via a warning light and green/red annotated diagram. The valves aren’t part of the system so normal valves are fitted.

On my F30 TPMS valves are used to transmit tyre pressure that can be read on the central screen. It’s easy to reset system from that screen for new TPMS valves.

I was also of the understanding that my F25 tyre pressure monitoring was based on wheel rotation speed

There’s a couple of different types of TPMS sensors

If the wheels you buy don’t have the correct ones they are available from BMW or elsewhere and can be retrofitted into the wheel set you buy

When I bought my F25 I bought a set of genuine winter wheels second hand that had been bought for an older F25

My BMW dealer supplied the correct TMPS sensors and fitted them when they did the winter change over for me

iirc they cost about £200 fitted @ BMW

Ian is correct.

I swapped our 19” MSport type 369 asymmetric wheels for the standard MSport 18” square set up ones, primarily to improve the awful ride quality, which it did massively. Helped by also ditching the run-flats. It will also allow me to rotate the tyres back to front, so I’m not binning a full set with loads still left on the front.

I had similar concerns re TPMS and spoke to both by local franchise and independent dealers. They states, as my research suggested, that the system runs on wheel rotation speed through the abs system.

So has tyres fitted with normal rubber valves, re-initiated the system and it works perfectly. As it should!

As an aside, I like swapping stuff about on all my cars. Without doubt, this removal of the 19” run flats to 18” normal tyres has had the greatest benefit to comfort and ride on any car mod I have done. And mine is the MSport but spec-ed with standard not sport suspension as it was Cardiff’s demonstrator so they knew how poor the ride could be.

It does depend, my F25 X3 has the TPMS in the valves. I switch from summer to winter and the system picks them automatically after a manual reset each time, done this for 4 years (eight tyre swaps) so far without a problem.

What does it show on the info screen? Measured psi superimposed on a line drawing of the car or does it show green symbols?

Interesting topic !

I have had the alert a few times recently whereby the TPMS triggers and warns me of pressure loss. The diagram on the screen just shows all four tyres without any pressures so I don't actually know which one has caused the issue (note that there is no issue with the tyres or pressures when checked manually).

I'm due to have 5 new runflats (245 front and 275 rear) in the next week or so, so I've ordered new TPMS units to be fitted in the wheels when the tyres are changed. I've done this as the car is a 2012 Msport 30d and after reading note that the TPMS lifetime for the batteries is 6-10 years.

Now after reading this thread I'm wondering if I actually have the TPMS units in the wheels or its on the ABS !!

Looks like I need to look closer and maybe I'll get a 120£ refund from ebay ! :-)
