Due to the battery under the boot floor, the floor is flush with the bottom of boot opening on a X3 30e. This means there is nothing to stop things falling out when the boot is opened. Pretty annoying (especially when you smack your head trying to duck down and grab something, but spring up faster than the automatic tailgate is rising).

Is there something I can buy to stop this? Something to create a small lip?

Don't want a cargo net (can't see it working with the weekly Tesco shop!). Using Google has thrown up boot liners but they don't seem to have a lip, and possibly don't fit the 30e properly anyway (there is a raised part of the floor on one side not present on other models).

A lot of people like a flat floor at the tailgate, it lets you sit there, protected from rain, when taking boots off.
How about some plastic, stacking, boxes? I have some collapsible boxes from an old Volvo I used to have (although I do not have your issue with a F30 saloon).

Our drive is on a slight incline so have this problem all the time. You could use bungee hooks, on our X3 there is a metal buckle on each side you could use. I'd never thought of doing this until now but it's unlikely to catch much really. I just price in the annoyance for each trip and get on with it to be honest. The neighbours probably have a good laugh watching me keep my hand under the boot as it's closing until the last microsecond.

Seems like rather dumb design to me.

Seems a design that suits some users (those who want a flush floor - for many reasons), and those that want a dropped floor. As for the slow automatic tailgate and bumping your head, well … I have seen the slowness at which they operate, and … no thanks.

It's odd as far as I'm aware the boot floor is higher on the 30e to accommodate the battery. So this 'helpful' flush floor is not present on other models, and a by product of the compromises made to make it a PHEV.

Almost like its not a desirable feature at all! biggrin

I had a Volvo estate with a flat floor, flush with the tailgate. Again, that was great to slide heavy loads in, sit on for a picnic, the tailgate keeping the rain off, or for changing boots (walking boots for me, rugby boots for my sons), if I bought an estate I would insist on a flat floor. I guess it’s horses for courses.

Do BMW do a liner specific? I had one for my 35d and the lip was a great help unstopping this exact issue.

Possibly. I didn't investigate too far as the pictures I saw there did not appear to be a lip.

This is helpful, thanks.
