N57 engine, reliability & prospective issues
Discussion
Good morning
I came across this article, https://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/19881803.uk-polic... and it seems the N57 engine is problematic i.e. forces being advised not to initiate high speed chases.
Any suggestions on things to look our for apart from the obvious engine on fire as well as maintenance suggestions.
Thanks.
Sam

Code off stop/start
Oil change with new filter at max 10k miles.
With every oil change add a bottle of Liqui Moly Ceratec.
Avoid chip tuning and heavy right foot from standstill.
That way your chain cam drive as well as crankshaft bearings will last a very long time.
P.S. I assume the car has had the EGR recall done.

Mines 435d 2013 xdrive.
EGR changed plus the cooler by BMW specialist.
Coded off the start/stop, thought just kill the alternator.
Liqui Moly Ceratec... does this have to be added aster the oil change or say a month or so later as it has just hand it done.

Start/stop won't kill the alternator but creates more stress for the starter. More importantly, it kills the lubrication of the engine, which is running "dry" for the first few seconds (when warm, and much longer when cold). Both the delicate cam chain drive as well as journal bearings are critically dependant on sufficient oil pressure to maintain the protective oil film - which you do not have during the start-up. This is where Ceratec' slippery ceramic layer (also) helps. BMW has made modifications to bearings in B58 engines, playing with low friction polymers, only to open another can of worms. Luckily B57 diesel did not receive this "upgrade".

Any snake oil will do, whenever you like. You'll get more benefit from a bottle of Gordons though. Chin Chin!
Oh okay so just marketing hyperbole?I've just added Ceratec to my F01 730D N57 and the cold start is quieter, already noticed that and I've done more miles in it this week with numerous chores and it's been the quietest since I've owned it...
This is alongside a full Liqui Moly 5W30 oil change also
I've done plenty of reading and it has plenty of very good reviews, it's £19 via Amazon, so it's worth trying IMO.
Not as if you're losing out on much!

Granted would agree there as long on balance as there is no harm.I've just added Ceratec to my F01 730D N57 and the cold start is quieter, already noticed that and I've done more miles in it this week with numerous chores and it's been the quietest since I've owned it...

As one of the posters stated its 300mL, need to make sure oil marker is not on max.

All I did was top the oil up after I poured the Ceratec in; but obviously that's easier when doing a full oil & filter change etc...
You could always buy one of the oil extractors off eBay and draw out 300ml of oil (via the dipstick tube)...

Use the dipstick (if you've one fitted); more accurate than the iDrive etc

I learned there is no dipstick tube... makes it a bit more of a challenge. May leave it for the next oil change then. Or oil extractor. All I did was top the oil up after I poured the Ceratec in; but obviously that's easier when doing a full oil & filter change etc...
