[218i] E5 or E10 fuel?

Hello all,
I recently posted about getting terrible mpg in my 66 plate 218i (<20mpg around town and 36mpg motorway on ECO mode).
I have been using E10 fuel since I got the car but yesterday I did a long trip and used up half the tank. I decided to refill the car with E5 fuel which seems to be labelled as "premium" and it was only 8p more per litre at Tesco compared to E10. On the way back from the petrol station I went into the trip computer which was giving me a live reading of my mpg and it was a hell of a lot more than I was getting on E10.
The majority of posts I can find seem to be about classic cars but has anyone had this with their modern car (?) because I feel it runs a lot more smooth on E5 - I'm asking because I've got an appointment booked at my indy this week and I don't want to waste money if it was a simple fix by switching to E5...
