E39 BMW 530i excessive smoke?
Discussion
Hey all
On my E39 530i, I would like to know if you think that the smoke from the exhaust is excessive?
someone at work said this to me so I thought I would gather opinions.
I think it is just steam as it was very cold.
Cheers

Just condensation...
The back boxes on these are huge and at this time of the year; they retain a lot of moisture. It'll do that most of the year TBH and only stop once you've got the car up to temps on a long run
You'll know if it's smoke as it'll be grey/white or blue'ish; mainly due to the CCV being blocked and needing to be changed out...
Until then, it's fine

Agree, quite normal.
When you burn a litre of petrol, you get about two litres of water; basic chemistry; and water to saturated steam at 100degC expands 1700x (all in round numbers)
So it is entirely normal to get such a plume on a cool day, until /everything/ is hot enough the exhaust plume isn't exiting supersaturated with water vapour.
... And if you want similar to giggle about, run a v8 version. 50% more displacement / idle consumption, and the exhaust system weighs oc.75lbs end to end - it's a lot of metal to get hot. You drag your own cloud system for quite a while in traffic

Yep, the amount of steam my 540 chucks out on a cold morning is quite impressive!
