My X1 is 1.5 years old and its just crossed 18000 miles, this has flagged up the oil service due indicator on idrive. I've booked into the local BMW garage for a oil service but its not for another 2 weeks and I need to use the car during that time.

After I explained this to the BMW dealer he said the following "I'm not supposed to tell you this but your car can still drive for another 3000 miles after the oil service due indicator comes on, so you will be fine to continue driving until the service appointment and as long as you don't do more than 3000 miles"

I'm a novice when it comes to cars, but is he talking bull here or is that genuine? I don't want to risk damaging the engine etc.

Surely the ‘oil service due’ indicator will have already given a decent time in the future? At switch on, it will say ‘service due at 19000 miles, or 03/2022’ or similar. It will never just jump up and effectively say ‘do it now’, you will have had advanced warning.
No doubts others will jump on here and say:
You MUST change oil every year/6 months/ month (or whatever their ingrained fixation is).

Change it sooner than 18000 if you want it to last, or if its on a 3 year pcp maybe you don't care?

Change at 9k miles and code out stop/start if it's a keeper. The oil used these days is extremely thin and if left for long provides very questionable lubrications. Not that BMW didn't know about it...car industry these days is turning into kitchen appliance industry, make sure it works until warranty runs out, but not much longer than that. Not good for business.
