Hi folks,

I've spent hours reading many forum posts and youtube videos about this issue but there does not seem to be any definitive solution.

I have a 2016 BMW 430d M Sport convertible with 40k miles on the clock. I purchased it from a dealer with 30k miles on the clock, maintained by main dealer full service history etc. from new.

I bought the car a year ago and since day one the brakes have squeaked (particularly when stopping at traffic lights, around town, in and around car parks, or any driving speed <15 mph). I live in London so this is an everyday hassle for me as it's rare to get above 20 with all of the restrictions and speed bumps.

Sometimes the squeaking is mild and controllable but sometimes it is UNBEARABLE. Super loud screeching which is just awful especially when you have the roof down. I feel bad for people in the nearby vicinity.

BMW said the brakes are fine and I should get over it. They suggested stripped and cleaning the pads for £1000 or thereabouts but no guarantee it would fix the issue.

A BMW independent specialist said my pads are fine - front ones look like they have 20k+ left on them but the rear ones could do with replacing. They're all original BMW pads. So, I changed the rear ones wondering if that would get rid of the squeal. It hasn't.

I've tried all the usual stuff of 60mph - 5mph hard stops, giving the car a good run on A roads to try and clear up the brakes but to no avail.

I wanted to know - is there some type of brake pad I can install (perhaps not the BMW OEM one if it has a bad reputation) that will (a) fit in my car with the blue brakes (b) not squeal like crazy. I heard the BMW OEM compound is tough and therefore this is harmonic resonance and is to be expected.

I'm looking at sourcing the parts and then getting an indy garage to fit them. It seems Pagid (£65), Brembo (£73) and Bosch (£103) are available. Does anyone know which brand is least likely to squeal? Or, should I suck it up and just go with the BMW OEM pads again and hope for the best. Or is there another brand which would be a wiser choice.

The cost concern is less of an issue I just want the problem gone.

Thanks smile

Changing the rears probably wouldn't help much as most braking uses the fronts?

I've used Pagid and Brembo on my BMW's and never had squeaky brakes. Change them over and see if it helps smile

Do you know if the pads are OEM or aftermarket?

ATE, Jurid, Textar and Galfer are OEM IIRC; but the pads could be all sorts of makes...

You could ask a local indy to take them out, inspect them, clean the carriers up, add some ceramic or anti-squeal paste to the 'ears' of the brake pads and that should stop it...

Pads aren't expensive, so you could look to replace them if the discs are decent with plenty of life left; it's the discs that cost!

Its been a problem since day one on my 840 GC. Its even more annoying because it doesn't squeak with light pressure or hard pressure, just the normal pressure you apply for day to day braking!

I even try and consciously brake well in advance or leave it later so it doesn't squeak. Its been in once and made no difference and the tech basically said we see this all the time.

I have my original 335d M-sport discs and pads, for 45k miles, ne’er a squeak from them, miles left on the rears. I would suggest new discs and pads on the fronts. Someone has changed something, somewhere along the line.

Never had a normal BMW that squealed its brakes even those with the m sport brakes but my M5 would do it exactly as the OP said at low speed ,the other 5 M cars didn't. but I know many suffer from this (I guess I've been lucky) doing a few hard stops on the M5 sorted it (but they were hard as much pressure as I could on a hot day with warm tyres from 90mph without engaging the ABS)

I have read about brake shims being fitted to address the issue on the US forums, I would urge the OP to check out bimmerpost, if there is a solution it will be on there.

I like the dealers suggestion of £1000 to clean the pads!
