Currently have one as a courtesy car whilst me e90 m3 is in. Wow it’s a nice car! The inside is such a nice place to be and the interface / dash / Idrive is much better than even cars around 2019.
I’m really impressed, when I do get rid of the m3 I’d have no problem going back to something like that.

day to day I find it hard to believe anyone who would need more.
I'd need the 330d or 335d to be honest!
I personally just don't enjoy using or listening to a 4 cylinder diesel engine. They don't feel in anyway premium to sit behind for me. However in saying that, I can understand why the majority love them though.

Tbh in the new 3 series its not intrusive as its a well insualted cabin with double glazing. Only if you open the window is it the usual clatter.

I was fortunate to compare a GLE300d(2.0 4 cyl diesel) recently to my GLE400d(2.9 straight 6 diesel). I was shocked at the difference between the 2 engines. The 6 cylinder engine is lovely and smooth to use, and it is even fairly decent to listen to as well. Yet the 4 cylinder engine was gruff and it felt strained when you pushed it in comparison. I think that if you don't care about engines then a 4 cylinder diesel engine will definitely do the job, but if you do care about engines then it just won't hit the spot I reckon.
I didn't realise that the new 3 series had double glazing, and I bet that does make a difference for sure.
I have the new X3 that also is a beautiful place to be, never thought they could get that 2.0 d so quite I know it’s got double glazing but even standing outside the car on cold start up it’s whisper quite, and as the OP said the I drive 7 interface is a delight, throw in HUD is fantastic, never get tired of a motorway drive

A mate of mine had a 320d and swore by it, said why would you need the bigger engine, what's the point? Etc, Etc, then he tried a 330d and now says he'll never go back to a four pot!

That engine feels so much better than the 330d believe it or not like a different engine entirely, relentless power as opposed to waiting for the turbo to kick in. Payback is 10% less fuel efficient.
But to be honest on my 400 miles a week I do not come anywhere close to using its capabilities, pointless really but...... nice to have though that is the problem.

I’m not saying I’d have love having one but I certainly wouldn’t be hateful if I had one for a couple of years.

I was hoping that the E61 520d Touring that I had was going to be alright to be honest, but for me I loved the car...however I genuinely hated the engine though. I guess that if I hadn't experienced other more capacity/more cylinder BMW engines previously to it though...then I'd probably be a bit more kind to the 20d engine(I went from a X5 4.8iS to the 520d for example). My 520d had a manual gearbox though and that wasn't a great match to the engine for me, whereas I did try an E92 320d auto at the same time that I had the 520d, and that definitely felt a lot less rough to use and I think the auto helped to make it feel a touch smoother to use as well.

I also have a 8 month old X3 20D and yes I am super-pleased with it. I wasnt aware mine had double glazing ? My only real beef is no active cruise control even with the Tech Pack. The car is brilliantly soundproofed and the 20d 190BHP engine with the mild hybrid function has enough performance tan I would ever want. Yes I did drool over the 30d but I didnt want to spend any more cash really.njw1 said:

The latest BMW interiors are really very good in my opinion; they’re well made and still have buttons!
