What parts does it need , apart from a bumper ?

Start looking for secondhand parts on Ebay breakers , let them right it off ,buy it back and repair it cheap .

Hopefully an expert will be along. I'll have a guess that a £2500 repair quote or less, will keep it off the register.

Are you getting/pushing for a courtesy car ?

Seems mad to write it off for that.

Will it go via BMW or an approved body shop? The latter will be cheaper but stuff like a hire car adds st loads to the bill.

My old E90 had a minor bump and Axa, my insurer sent it to BMW. Despite the damage to the rear bumper being minor they replaced rather than repaired it, add in a week in an F30 330d and the bill wasn’t small.

A write off only has to constitute around 60% of the market value of the car (uneconomical repair) Therefore unfortunately even a minor impact can; as noted lead to some eye watering repair costs especially when factoring in main dealer or dealer approved repair centers. A new bumper alone from BMW I can imagine is not cheap, add labour for painting and fitting and you could be looking at a healthy 4 figure sum.

Depending on the car a 1" scratch on the bumper could technically write it off.

It shouldn't be a write off if it only needs a bumper and an undertray or two, but until the bumper is off it's hard to tell what else may have been damaged.

I hope it can be repaired though. thumbup

Always argue the point with the insurance Co as they will do anything to keep their costs down.
Last year someone hit the side of my son’s e46 340ci. They started off by saying they wanted to cat S it, in the end they paid out over £5k for a repair.

Personally, from the photo I’d put a secondhand bumper on that, replace the rad support with secondhand (bolt on) and not even claim on the insurance.

IMHO something like that is not worth claiming on insurance. Save your no claims/possibly even fighting the premium hike following an at fault claim. TPO plastic weld and spray to paint match should not be more than £700. As said though, you don’t know what else has been damaged until you take it apart. The general area has some strong reinforcement behind it so I doubt there would be much else damage.

Even if the bumper is cheaper used online. Just because it’s white doesn’t mean it will be a straight match. White is no different and can be tricky to blend. Get some quotes.

Good luck with it.

I had an E92 LCI in the same colour and had a new front bumper and headlight fitted after someone reversed into me. From memory, the cost of the repair was £3.5k: £2k for the bumper, £1k for the headlight and the rest for bits and bobs. Those costs were at a main dealer bodyshop although it happened in 2013 so I can imagine there’s been quite an increase since.

At the moment, cars are being written off at much lower values than this (PAV - Pre Accident Value as it is called). I've seen it down in the 40s%.
A few drivers of this:

Parts availability with unknown ETAs. This adds storage fees and hire car charges to the claim cost.
High salvage values - salvage co's "bridge the gap" i.e. pay over the odds to the insurer to make writing the car off a viable option.

Not great for some customers who then struggle to find a replacement vehicle but insurers want to settle and close claims as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately the OPs car could quite easily be written off with that damage even though it will end up back on the road. If the damage isn't structural i'd be looking to get a payment and then fix it myself.

I think I’d be tempted to do the same. If it is just cosmetic damage, it should be easy enough to fix.

A problem is the quote will be low. It is not until the shop actually begins to repair the car that more damage is found. I hit a mule deer with my Porsche 996 Turbo. The initial estimate was $20,000. But the final cost ended up being closer to $25,000.

More recently my Dodge Challenger was hit and the estimate was around $6,000. But the final repair cost came to $8200.

Added: Thought I included pics of the two cars I mentioned but I see they aren't present above. Let me try again....
