Hi all

My 630i keeps throwing up coolant out of the over flow hole on the expansion vessel, I also have a electric water pump 'speed deviation' on the error codes. Speaking to a few garages and looking at the forum this looks like it's time to change out the pump ASAP.

Car is within touching distance of 90k and no sign of this job in its history file.

Could some one point me to the exact part number/water pump I need please. Can only seem to find them for the N52 engine, not sure if they are the same?

I'm going to buy it on its own and get a garage to fit, I've seen them for around £300 but two garages I use want £450 for the pump

Thanks

Yes, they are the N52 pump. You can get a Pierburg pump for around £250-300 so I've no idea where £450 comes from.

Yup; they're always very good

They're one of my main 'go-to's' when it comes to car parts, them & C3BMW

Strongly recommend you also change the thermostat at the same time. It needs to come off to replace the pump, so for the sake of an extra £60 or so you might as well put a new one in otherwise it's another big job if you need to replace it later. The OE manufacturer for the thermostat is Mahle, they are available from the same seller as the water pump link posted above.

Good call!

Plus they're both UK based, so less faff with postage and delivery times...

My pals ordered a few bits for his 335D from Germany; ordered & paid 2 weeks ago, still no sign of them and now he's losing patience!

That one i linked to came from Germany in a week, but theres absolutely no guarantees of that. I wasnt in a rush for mine so didnt really care either way.

The other risk around getting them foreign is the risk of having to pay VAT on the way in. I didnt, but again there seems to be no guarantee of that.

For quick and hassle free then defo UK based, but if someones not in a rush then the german option is worth considering. I'd do it again.

Out of stock, what a pain. I will watch it for a few days and see if they come back in

Even though it states Germany; it shows the business as registered in the Czech Republic

I'd be wary about stuff like that; but that's just me

Personally I'd rather pay more and deal with UK based tried & trusted sellers, but each to their own

OK I've placed the order, that's a great price for both the pump and thermostat. Thanks for all your help! Any idea what the import duty might be if gets pulled?

I will feed back on it once I get it installed

Also bear in mind paying the VAT on import if buying from Germany etc.

Mine came through fine without the VAT. Not sure if that was luck or they only check a percentage.

I think its 20% VAT plus a norminal handling charge. It seems quite random as to whether or not it'll happen.

It worked out the cheapest way by far for me. Some crazy prices being quoted from local suppliers / BMW and even on some UK online prices.

In future:

- It's always worth checking with Cotswold BMW - they can be quite reasonable for OEM parts price & availability

- It would (if not too late) be worth considering changing the expansion bottle as well while you are in there

- Might be worth a read of this https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/BMW-E60/... - I know its not the same car or engine buts its the same era and the principles will be similar. Like realoem.com Pelican Parts tech articles are a must go to if you're doing your own spannering.

Whilst Cotswold can be pretty cost effective, buying the same part not in a BMW box is loads cheaper….

I had to replace the eccentric shaft sensor on my 130i, the part from BMW was £325 but a VDO sensor (OE manufacturer) was £175 and arrived with the part number ground off.

^^^

This

Some parts BMW Cotswolds are heard to beat; but most stuff is laughably expensive and the OEM make can be found elsewhere with some digging...

Ie. M54 water pump - OEM BMW (IIRC) was c£300, stat c£150

Walher stat (OEM) via BMWmotormec - £45, Meyle/Lemforder/Mahle water pump - c£25-£45 etc...

BMW will never compete with those prices

That's why using RealOEM and eBay/Autodoc/C3BMW etc can save you a LOT of money

Thanks for that, looks a detailed thread. Happy to admit a garage will be doing it for me though. I'm getting quoted a three hours labour, so still coming in bloody expensive. Will do a full coolant change at the same time
