M135i Opinions?
Discussion
Similar position to you where my kids (or, adults?) are off at uni and I am currently awaiting my M135i to be delivered (hopefully next week). I downsized from an F80 M3 personally so not quite a drop in size as you but when I test drove the M135i I thought it was great. Fast enough, enough room inside the cabin for us two and the occasional rear seat passenger and from memory I thought the boot looked plenty plus made better by the fact it's a hatch.
I've just bought a 2019 M140i from a main dealer. Coincidentally, the salesman also owns an M140i. That's his personal car, not his company car.
At the handover yesterday, we were talking about the various small "performance" models that BMW sell, and he was less than complimentary about the current 1 series offerings. With front or 4 wheel drive, and 2 litre engines, they have lost their USP - RWD and a 3 litre 6 pot.
I guess it makes the current M135i more of a direct Golf R rival.....

The current 1er is better than the previous 1er in certain areas and vice versa, different cars I guess....soon be all electric so differences between brands will be even less no doubt. At the handover yesterday, we were talking about the various small "performance" models that BMW sell, and he was less than complimentary about the current 1 series offerings. OP, what deal did you get and who from (lease?)? Interested to hear what the current prices are compared to when i ordered in Feb '21 (M135i, metallic, Plus pack, service pack from Arnold Clark, 3+35, 8k pa, £342pm).
(previous M135i, M2 and current model M135i owner).

Very much this; the interior is a massive step up in terms of quality and the tech is a jump on albeit with some old stuff like actual buttons and the idrive wheel. The nannies are are awful though and a complete pain in the arse; the lane assist is way too aggressive and the speed limit display is massively inaccurate.
Old car gas a massively flawed chassis bit an incredible drive train.
I guess it ultimately depends on what you want from the car.
I wouldn’t call the 135i a very ‘BMW’ BMW - as someone else said it’s more a BMW Golf R - but if you want a capable, comfortable well equipped car then I think they’re great.
I’ve driven one a few times and I own a 2018 M140i myself with the M Performance LSD.
The 140i absolutely has the better drive train and the diff goes a long way to improving it’s road manners. I’d consider that the more ‘drivers car’ of the two too, so to speak.
But, although arguably less fun or visceral, I’d go as far as saying even with two less cylinders the 135i is just as quick on the road day to day and feels a little more sure footed when making progress with the X Drive system.
I think if you can get a good deal on it, especially in the current car climate it would be a good thing to go for.

I bought mine in January 2021 and it has covered over 22K .
Storm grey with mamba red interior.
It came with Pro.Tech.and Comfort 2 packs .lumbar support and a Pan roof.
My previous BMW was a 340 i .
First impressions . If you get over the fact its missing a few cylinders , It does what it says on the can .
A very capable car with enough room for four adults.
A clever split floor in the boot helps with luggage .
The car is used solely to commute into London , but I have to say the MPG readings are a little ambitious at best ( 46 mpg in Eco mode )
I managed to get 15K out of the Bridgestone tyres which are now on Pirelli P zeros.
Living with the car.
It's a real pain keeping it clean especially the 19 inch wheels .
Having said all that you won't be disappointed. the quality and fit and finish of the interior is second to none.
ETA .The first service including the pollen filter was £320

I assume you have turned lane assist off? I did from day one so have never experienced any nannying!
My speed limit display has 99% been fine I find.

Can you turn set it so it's always off or have to turn it off each time you start the car? I've not taken delivery yet but noticed this annoyance on the test drive.

I had a courtesy car with it whilst my 140i was having a new backbox fitted under warranty. I only had it for a few days but had to turn it off every time I got in the car. Good to know that it can be disabled permanently because it was very intrusive.

I did a software update on mine to achieve this. Also had another major software update to the Satnav and to make the Exhaust sound a little bit louder back in Nov 2021. I had major problems with that , but that's another story.

I really really want a M140i/M240i, I'm just very concerned about current values. This one for example is a lovely spec and what I'm after, I just can't stomach the asking price for a 4yo car.

I know this is crystal ball territory but how much do you reckon this would be worth in 2-3years, with an extra 8k miles a year on?

That’s expensive. My 140i, new in 2019 was £28k. After 4 years, 48,000 miles BMW predicted that it was going to be worth £13k (could have been 15k).This one for example is a lovely spec and what I'm after, I just can't stomach the asking price for a 4yo car.

Obviously covid has massively skewed the market but if there is a correction, I can’t help feeling that stuff like this will take a kicking. They jobbed so many out in cheap finance deals, so they’re not exactly rare.

That does look quite pricy. Mine is a 19 plate, registered May 2019, so a year newer, but has done 46k miles. The mileage isn't an issue for me, as I'll be doing less than 4k a year. This one for example is a lovely spec and what I'm after, I just can't stomach the asking price for a 4yo car.

I paid nearly £3k less, approved used, main dealer.
As for future values, my feeling is that these will do better than a similarly priced 3 litre 3 or 4 series, as nobody is building a 3 litre, 6 cylinder, rwd hatchback anymore. That's how my man maths worked anyway.

I'm looking to sell/trade my M135i in as after 13 months I've only done 4800 miles. Been offered £34k from WBAC which is crazy as only paid just over that new. I previously had a M140i and find the F40 a better all rounder but if you don't mind the older tech the Clubman JCW is so much more fun to drive and handles better then the M135i.
I'm currently struggling to decide what to get next for the school runs, maybe a 3dr JCW if the kids can fit in the back.
